And some of the first of those have already taken up permanent residence in local landfills.

Doubtful.

My ashes will probably be designated as "toxic waste" by the EPA.

Actually, even with the awful tone and the poor audio quality you can tell the difference there. If people can't I don't know what to say to that. As far as videos like this you can hear the camera's mic breaking up constantly. These guys are giving you two different amps. Both very good quality representations of amps built for what they do, and making them both sound like crap because they are first shooting for crappy tone, and then recording them with garbage equipment. Based on those videos I wouldn't buy either of those amps, and I wouldn't buy anything from either of them. Just my opinion, of course.

Sorry to derail this thread, but this is depressing. A local guy has a used mint 59 Bassman Reissue at a really, really good price. I have a project someone has asked me to play guitar on coming up, but it's likely not going to be on a permanent basis, and it wouldn't really be useful as a bass amp. However, I reeeeeeaaaallllly want it, but I've just saved up enough money to get myself a new Bassman 100T and 410. Gah!!! This is driving me nuts.

Hahahah, not that good. However, it's just below going rate on a site like Reverb or Ebay, and he's asking OBO. If it was 500 I would just do it and not think about it. Even my girl told me I should get it. (that's a rare occurence) However, I've worked real hard to get the funds I have between gigging and moving gear. I just don't know if I should cut into that for what amounts to a pure indulgence.

The very inexpensive Fender Champion 40 is true $180 gem. I love these guys from the Rock Garage in Oz.

Circuitry aside, I wonder what the difference would have been if they would have leveled the playing field a bit by putting a Tremolux speaker in the Mustang. Not really a fair tube vs modeling comparison when the Tremolux has such a better speaker. Not that I'm defending the Mustang - I love my tubes. Just keeping an open mind and giving the Mustang the benefit of the doubt. They did sound very similar - close enough that the better speaker could have made the difference. On my laptop through headphones anyway. Might have been different live.

I really dig these inexpensive Champion 40's! I jammed with a cat that had a Strat into a Champion 100, and it was killer!

A bass amp for acoustic guitar is a good affordable choice. Both acoustic and bass amps have clean, non-distorting tone controls and low internal gain.
A small practice bass amp with a 12"-15" speaker will have all the clean headroom you could ask for acoustic or Country electric clean music. There are lots of then hidden in closets and on Craigslist for $200-$300 around here.
The main difference is the type of compressor in the amp. Good quality acoustic amps have starvation compressors the slowly raise and lower the gain when you play harder. It has the same characteristics as a cathode bias tube amp. Bass amps just have a clipping compressor. Since they generally have more power than their acoustic counterparts, the compressor seldom triggers at playing volumes.
The sonic differences between the Fender tone stack and other types of tone controls is readily apparent at any volume.
The sonic differences between tube and solid state amps usually only become apparent at maximum power and complex waveshapes, Uh... Trainwreck distortion, complex chords, etc.

Listening tests are mostly useless when the listener is also playing the guitar. We are not really good multi-taskers. Your listening acuity is clouded by, 1 The focus your brain requires to physically play the music. 2 The way you already have the song in your head. 3 The generally poor position in relation to the speaker.
Listening tests should be conducted by a listener who can focus their attention fully to the music. The music should push the limits of the equipment to expose differences. You wouldn't test a sports car by driving it 55 down the Interstate.
To listen, relax, close your eyes and push your conciousnessto the back of your brain where your ears are. Let all that thinkety-think fade away and you will find your hearing acuity increase within 15 seconds.

Now you can listen and stand a chance at distinguishing differences..

I used a Bassman 50 and a 2 X 12 back when (late 60s/early 70s) -- great blues sound, good with acoustic and I even used it now and then for bass (in a Jazz trio). In terms of volume, I could cover (unmic'ed) a modest sized high school gym, bar or club. But on the other hand, my band wasn't very loud; it wouldn't have worked had we been playing loud rock.

Nowadays though, I find that there are any number of guitar amps that do the job better so that's the way I go. I would consider a Bassman as my sole amp only if I was back in the original situation: playing guitar in a modest volume blues band, backing up folk singer/guitarists as one side line and playing bass in a Jazz trio as another project. I found it very versatile in that sense.
