Jim Marshall came up with an earth shaking amp. Not bad for a DRUMMER. He taught Mitch Mitchell drum lessons on Saturdays. Mitch met Jimi Hendrix, and that was the connection for Jim M. meeting Jimi H.

I always though it was cool how someone could just simply with the parts and knowledge build an amplifier. That's something I wish I could do. I suppose if I ever got off my $@! and wanted to learn something, that would be it. Besides, knowing electronics you can fix your own crap and not have a freak out if something breaks.

It was a bit more accessible for those types of parts back in the 60's too. Stores like Radio Shack, Lafayette Electronics, etc. had all the stuff. Or if they didn't have it in the store's stock, the old catalog was there to order it.

+1

My Dad was always building stuff and regularly ordered parts from the Lafayette and Allied-Signal catalogs. On Saturday mornings he'd take my brother and I around to the local Radio Shack to grab the more prolific and mundane stuff to complete his projects. I guess the exposure to electronics rubbed off on us kids -- my brother became an engineer for Hewlett-Packard and I went into military radar maintenance.

Speaking of Radio Shack and Lafayette, this website here has copies of their old catalogs from way back in the day you can look at. http://www.radioshackcatalogs.com/ It's too bad it's not like this anymore.

Ain't that the truth!

I remember when Radio Shack built some pretty decent hi-fi gear under their "Optimus" house-brand name.

Yes they did have some good Stereo systems. My wife and I had one for quite sometime.
