At one time back in 1969, and forward a couple of years, about every big name used Sunn at one time or another. Sunns were one of the prime amps at Woodstock also. Gone…………….

Damned expensive and almost impossible to get due to such high demand. I wanted one/some :)

I thought I read somewhere, that Conrad Sundholm, is making limited numbers of amps again. He started in his garage originally. Then he created Sunn.

+1

The same for the big industrial-grade Acoustic 360's.

Wow, I checked an inflation calculator and $3000 back in 1971 would be the equivalent to $17,327.11 today. I don't know how much wages were back then (the only thing I do know I was born in December of 1971 :P ) but I imagine for the average aspiring musician, that was probably quite a stretch to come up with.

Yeah, VW Beatles cost around $2,000. Estimated: (1970-1971)

Just found this while doing a little research on Sunn: http://www.conradamps.com/www.conradamp ... lcome.html

He's making tube guitar combo amps and a tube bass pre amp right now.

It's a great story about the Sundholm brothers, Sunn Amps, and The Kingsmen.

Yeah, from what I've read, bass amplification was pretty primitive back in the 60's. I bet no one would imagine the 1000 watt power houses they have out today. Hell, even I didn't back when I started in the late 80's. I remember when I started playing, seeing an advertisement for a Dean Markley bass head that was 400 watts and thinking what a monster that must be. Then I got my 450 watt Peavey Databass amp and ruled the stage (or maybe not. :P) That was one amp a kind of regret letting go. It had some balls to it. It had to because a friend of mine who I started my first band with had a 130 watt Peavey combo that he wasn't afraid to use the volume knob of. I needed the juice, and it provided it. Damn, we were loud.

Class D amps have been one of the best things to happen to amplification. Light powerful and tone friendly. It has a warm in bass amplification I never heard from othere SS amps. I had a GH 800RB for years and never found the sound I can get from my rumble with flat EQ. Some more treble and a nudge of mid set at either the 3 or 9 o'clock (depending on desired tone for a song) frequency position and I have my basic working tone.

I went to a studio last week and they showed me the SWR I had to use. (not sure of the model). I told him I would "slum it".

Yeah, Bass amps were up coming in the 60's. The most powerful amp we mentioned a few months ago, for back about 1969, was the Dan Electro / Coral / Kilowatt, that didn't make it.

I remembered that you mentioned that. I don't think I found much info on it or not, though. When someone mentioned some oddball piece of gear, especially older amps, I always feel compelled to look into it. I'm sort of nerdy like that. I have a slew of links saved related to this stuff. Some people like to look at cat videos, I like to look at that stuff.
