Hi,
need help - I wan't to rebuild or more likely build from scratch a Pyramid Cabinet 412.

Do any of you have one?

I would need the exact dimmensions as in attached file:

Image

You can write in INCHES or MILIMETERS.

Does anyone know how it looks like from the inside? Any photos?

Regards,
Tho

Here's your pic......

Image

This is the Bassman 100 enclosure, circa 1973.

The box has a sealed back, internal bracing to provide mounting for the four individual baffle boards, and the speakers load from the front.

These turn up periodically on Ebay for reasonable money -- why build when you can buy an original?

Hi Retroverbial,

Thank's for the quick answer and posting the pic!
There are few reasons which push me to make my own, but the most important is price. Even if it's reasonable price for the cab itself the shipping to Poland is twice the cost so...

Anyway thanks,
Tho

You can always try Fender Customer Relations. Those old plans still exist somewhere. Maybe they would send you a copy. Never hurts to ask.

Hi linnin,

yea, I've already sent them a email yesterday. Hope that they'll write me back.
I use few forums also - the more ways the bigger chance someone will help me.

Regards,
Tho

Maybe brotherdave will see this and be able to help, or affprod. They are both very knowledgable. Retroverbial (who has already posted) is also quite an expert. If the plans are out there in private hands, they are the ones that will most likely know.

If I had plans or pics of one of these cabs in a "disemboweled" condition, I'd surely post them. Truth told, I was out of the country when these enclosures were introduced and I've never seen the interior details at all -- only the front of the baffle with the grill frame removed.

Now a Sunn 200S enclosure? That I know something about.

These cabs were designed initially for a 100 watt tube head but were also used with a 130 watt tube head. The speakers are Oxford made 30 watt 4 ohm speakers. Let's see, 30 watts x 4 = 120 watts. Hmmmm. The cab total impedance is 4 ohms. Anyway these cabs were somewhat less than spectacular sounding, but better than the preceding Fender 2x12. The Pyramids were so heavy they had 3 handles on the side so 3 people could share the burden. Compared to the Sunn and Ampeg cabs of the same era they lacked. This particular concept crammed a lot of speaker cone into too small an area. They are low-mid heavy. You'd be better served with a more modern 2 or 3 way computer designed cab. But if you want to cram speakers in too small a space then the angled baffles are the way to go.

Bass cab construction is best left to professionals. Sometimes even then the results are less than spectacular and this cab is a good example. I surely wouldn't have any part in any bass cab build from scratch myself as there is too much involved.

I do not have the drawings, plans or anything else related to these speakers, nor do I know where to get it other than from Fender. I do know they used 30 watt Oxford sourced 4 Ohm speakers though which were labeled "FENDER SPECIAL DESIGN."

If I had one of these cabs I'd be glad to send photos but I don't. I've never owned one. I never really liked them much. I was playing Sunn and Ampeg stacks during this era (using Fender basses of course!) If I had to build a bass cab this would probably be one of the last designs I'd pick. I'd go with a Sunn design as they were fuller sounding. Today's modern computer designed cabs are way better than any cabs from the "golden days of yesteryear" fidelity and SPL wise.

Hello brotherdave,
the thing is that it is not ment to be a stage cab for me as I'm not bass player.

A lot of people told me that they were/are really great sounding in little studios (max 20 sq meters) for guitars and not basses.

I've checked the 200s and found some sites with drawings and dimmensions. As for bass I think that it would be better construction and sounding than pyramid nevertheless I'll try to make this pyramid copy or maybe counted with computer and scaled with 10'' speakers? Wouldn't be so heavy

Regards,
Tho

Ok, maybe not "a lot" but "few" -> studio owners / guitar players.
So I understand that you dissagree with them?

I've never heard it (the cab itself) live - can't tell who's right.
Just listening to some opinions and compare them.

The Bassman 100 enclosure would absolutely and unequivocally be my LAST choice for use as a studio guitar cab -- regardless of brand or type of speakers installed.

You know what? I can actually see where a studio owner/producer/engineer would say precisely that. These cabs have a very narrow range mid to lower mid frequency response with little acoustic artifacts. It would be a very predictable studio cab, always sounding mediocre making it quite easy to record it. Roll off the mic preamp mids and lows a dab and presto, you get a mediocre controlled vanilla tone.

Studio engineers love predictable easily controlled recording setups. I honestly see their point of view on this because no matter how the player adjusts the amp EQ it is not going to respond to anything but low or mid EQ changes. Studio guys just love limiting tonal options because it makes their lives easier in the booth and this would be one of the least responsive guitar cabs on the planet to any upper mid or treble EQ changes. From their point of view it is a "good" guitar cab!

To these same people the evolution of electric bass amps stopped in 1960! From their point of view the Ampeg B-15 is the best bass amp ever invented. Few players would say that with a straight face though. Yes it is a solid, reliable amp but the tonal options and volume are similarly limited making recording them predictably an easy setup.
