Some black paint on the bottom panel. Notice how all the seams have been factory sealed.

Sonic Barrier Acoustic Foam

Image

Thick 1 1/4" composit for the back panel opposite the baffle board, and 1/2" foam for everything else except the 'floor' & slot ports.

The hard part was cutting the foam to fit this irregular pentazoid!

Yeah, I remember you saying that you weren't happy with the results. That sucked about the speaker, too. So what did you do with the foam?

It's still inside! I'm going to live with it awhile, and see how the new woofer sounds. All is not bad, and I'm going to post the pros vs cons of the foam later.

First, let me say that I am actually happier with the outcome of this mod than previously stated. Let's look at the CONS:

- - - - - CONS - - - - -

1) Voids Warranty - if you're gigging; jamming out-and-about, generally moving and pushing your amp hard, then this is a very legitimate concern. For me, if my amp should fail for any reason, I'd be taking out the amplification unit from the combo and sending it off to a service center for repairs or replacement, so the warranty may not be void afterall. I'm not worried.

2) It's expensive in both time and $$$ spent. Just like modding a Squier bass, enjoy the mods because you'll never get your money back out of it. Yet people do it all the time and rave about it, and this is no different.

3) There is a kind of hollow wooden acoustic airiness to the highs that a naked box has, and if you line it, it's gone. If you're playing an acoustic/electric or semi-hollow body bass, I'd think this is some tone quality that you'd want to keep. Also if you like a super ringy-zingy twangy-wangy top end, you'll most likely want to keep your box naked.

4) While it does plenty of good things too, lining your box will highlight your woofer's weaknesses/deficiencies. It doesn't change your driver's frequency response range or what it can do well, but you're going to also hear more of what it doesn't do so well. Fender's Special Design speaker in my Rumble is an excellent woofer for it's price point. Just don't be surprised if you find yourself wanting a better woofer.

5) This doesn't turn your Rumble combo into a 300 watt Super Bassman with an 810 cab. See the following list of pros.

+ + + + + PROS + + + + +

1) Tightens Up Bottom End! Boy Howdy, does it ever! This is the main reason I decided to persue this madness in the first place. Increases Lo Hz Definition & Clarity! It doesn't actually make your woofer sound better, but you do get to hear more of the good stuff it's pumping out. Improves Low End Focus

2) Low Mid Punch Up! Talk about an increase in attack, this really works wonders. I was and still am very pleasently pleased with this outcome.

3) Overall smoother mid-range. It's like icing on the cake. Pretty & Sweet - Yet Subtle.

4) Sweeter Highs. Harshness (no tweeter/horn) Attenuated. *If you like a lot of savage bite in your top end, then a naked box and a screaming tweeter is for you*

5) FUN! Modding your Rumble Combo can be fun if you take and keep the right attitude.

Well, it seems that you're happy with the outcome after all. It wasn't a total disaster. I only have one amp that I'm going to need to gig with, so I can't take any chances with it, myself. At least not until the warranty expires, and/or I have another amp and it's regulated to back up/beater status. I'm happy with the sound, but it does seem fun to mess with stuff like that. If anything, maybe some sort of cosmetic modifications. I'd love to make it look like an old school Fender with the silver grill cloth and badge, or pay tribute to the Blues Brothers and put some red shag carpet on it. :P

In some cases, insulation added to a cab, will change the characteristics in a negative way with higher playing volumes. Added insulation other than factory specs, may muffle, or cut the higher volume tones, and air movement from the cab.
