 Just got one of these! 8)

http://www.sweetwater.com/store/detail/GRAMMA/

I think they are pretty nifty keen; boss, and groovy all at the same time.

"The "GRAMMA" in Auralex's Great GRAMMA stands for "Gig and Recording, Amp and Monitor, Modulation Attenuator" — a slick name, for a slick tool. Just "float" your gear on the Auralex Great GRAMMA and enjoy acoustic isolation and purer tone."

I put one under my Rumble 75, and guess what :?: It works, and does exactly what they say it does! Noticeably tighter bottom end and better precieved projection in the low midrange too. If your amp sits on any kind of wooden floor that is open underneath (ie a house with a basement or crawl space underneath; any stage or riser, and especially in an apartment) disconnecting and isolating your amp from the floor is a BIG Sonic Deal. You're going to sound better at rehearsal and at the gig too.

The GRAMMA is big enough for any of the Rumble combos to include the Rumble Neo Cabs. For a 410 or 412 step up to the Great GRAMMA. so loose those damn casters and get your combo or cab up off the floor and tighten up your sound.

In a perfect world, no one would ever need to decouple -- physically -- a cab from a floor, because all cabs would be 100% inert, i.e. no vibrations.

Unfortunately, this is not the case. Cabs do vibrate, even the best-braced ones, even the heaviest ones. It's just a matter of degree. That's why isolators can help in some cases. I think they help most with the lightest and most marginally-braced cabs.

An important point about these isolators is that they decouple only physically, not acoustically. There's still a lot of acoustical coupling going on.

Regarding acoustical coupling, there are games you can play to change the tonal balance of your rig. The closer your cab is to the floor, the higher up into the midrange the reinforcement will be. The higher the cab, though, the less midrange reinforcement. If you ever want more bass, therefore, try raising the cab a foot or two. What that will do is decouple the cab's midrange output from the floor, but leave the coupling in the bass region intact. With a smaller cab, it can make a meaningful difference. Experimentation is key. I think this was the reason they invented milk crates. ;-)

Hope this helps.

This raises an interest newb question for me.
Are these products any different really in concept compared to the castors on my 150 combo? And, should I remove or leave on the castors for gigs and proper rehearsals.

Yes Chains11, it is very different. Castors are for ease of movement, and not to play on top of. To my ear leaving your amp on castors totally wimps out your sound. Now that I have an Auralex GRAMMA I'll always use it. You should try one.

You are quite welcome, James. I don't know of anything else that for $55 will give your bass rig a tighter more well defined bottom along with more clearly focused mids. It doesn't use batteries, and you don't have to plug it in. Never have to worry about the tone settings and it never goes out of adjustment. Just set it on the floor and put you rig on top. Now what could be easier or more cost effective?

That is a good idea. We have similar things for under the studio monitors.

Looks easy enough to build yourself. I wonder if you can for under $55?

Nope

You'd have to buy the super dense Auralex foam to make strips and also for fill. Far more expensive than any $55. Don't kid yourself into thinking you can use mattress topper & egg crates as some have done. Cheapskates are dumb. Musical cheapskates are "dumber". Smart money always buys a well engineered product.

A/C companies used Cork IsoPads in the late 60's / early 70's, to reduce shaking, and vibrations of the central units that ran 5 tons and over. They worked well on studio amps back then too.

Has anyone ever used the ampwedge product? It looks simple and gives you up to a 20 degree tilt, while also providing isolation and clarity. Just wondering.....

I've not, but they do look pretty cool. Only a foot wide and seems best suited for a guitar combo, but you could use two for a bass combo or cab, and would give you a nice tilt-back angle. However it does not give you complete decoupling from the floor. At $30 it'd be great for a Bronco 40.

It does look useful. Gives me an idea for making my own. Will probably stay as an idea.
