I have never seen, much less played through these Rumble NEO cabs, but I would surely like to do so. :)

Just got off the phone with "Brad" at Fender Customer Relations. He told me both cabs have the same specs for frequency response being -10db at 40Hz at the low end. The top end being insanely high because of the tweeter. I asked him about using two of the 112 cabs and he thought that would be "stellar", but the 2X8 & 112 cabs were most definiately designed to compliment each other.

In a simular design vein, Genz-Benz, has their Uber Quad with the very same Eminence Neo drivers. 112 with 2X8 and a Foster horn. The 2X8 drivers are in their own tuned enclosure within the cab, and they are crossed over for 150Hz and up. That makes them a super solid kennel of mid-range barkers. :D Bass Hounds DeLuxe! WOOF! No. I've never seen or played through a Genz-Benz Uber Quad. :(

None of the authorized Fender dealers within a 100 mile radius of me carry Rumble heads or cabs. Just combos. Grrrr

So please vote and comment. Thank You

 I really do wish that I could have two each of both cabs, so I could run them as matched pairs of like drivers. 8) That could be the fourth and most expensive option. hmmmm....

I would go with the 2 1X12 cabs. I 'm using a Markbass 2 1X12 cabs now, and like how the 12's sound. I used 12's years ago, and forgot how good they really sound.

I agree on the sound of todays twelves. The Fender Special Design 12" in my Rumble 75 is an excellent sounding speaker that is rich and meaty. The Eminence NEO drivers in the Rumble 112 cabs are even better, and the cabs themselves are well designed.

CPL made some cogent remarks on a sister thread -

Yeah, I've heard about the 12's. I've noticed a lot of people seem to like those. I think if I were to go that route, I'd want a 2x12" cab instead of two singles so it would be less crap I'd have to carry unless I needed to. I was curious about the 8" on it's own, sans the 12" speaker. How it holds up. I know SWR made a 8x8" cab years ago, but I don't know anything about it other than it's existence.

I had forgotten all about the SWR "Henry The 8 By 8" as it was called. They were well regarded as I recall. Much smaller and lighter than 8x10 and moving as much air as 4x15's. So two Rumble 2x8 move as much air as 2x15's in a much smaller and lighter package.

I went and voted for the 2 12"s option, since to be honest, I have no clue what 8"s are like and I'm at least familiar with the 12"s from the past. If some would clue me in on how the 2x8" cab actually performs on it's own, or doubled with another 2x8" cab, that would be cool. Maybe someday, I can find out for myself, if I can ever get to a music shop that would actually have one.

None of the above. 410. 40 inches of speaker cone moves more air than the other options. It might not fit in a Fiat, but that is the one to have.

True. Another thing about it is it's 4 ohms (the Rumble, anyway) so you don't have to haul extra cabs for full power.

To the OP's question . . .

1) It is never a good idea to mix non-identical cabs in the same frequency range, unless you want to risk phasing anomalies and the resulting tone/response irregularities. Never mind that some people (even big-name endorsers, cute and otherwse) do it. It still falls way outside the bounds of Best Practices.

2) A single 12 has slightly larger cone area than a pair of 8s. That tells me a pair of 8s will barely be able to keep up with a single 12, given same driver Xmax (piston stroke). But we do not know the Xmax specs of the 12" and 8" drivers in question, so not only is a direct comparison impossible, but also we have no idea how loud either of these cabs can go.

3) We don't know the efficiency specs of the drivers in these cabs. Eminence will be happy to make you drivers at whatever specs you want if you can present them with a large enough order to warrant the tooling-up. Maybe the 12s in question are more efficient than the 8s (allowing for cone area difference). Or maybe it's the other way around. We don't know. That's a second shot into the gut of any comparison.

4) For a reflex (vented) cab, its -10dB point is useful only for telling you when the driver has begun to run in free air, i.e. below the cab's tuning frequency. At VERY low volume, the -10dB point might be usable, but in a live setting it's not usable at all -- not without risking driver overexcursion, which will eventually cause cone creasing and even tearing. About all you can do with that spec is to decide where to set your subsonic filter (slightly above the -10dB point).

I would visit some (ahem) "other forums," and read everything you can find on the cab family in question.

Hope this helps.

I agree it's the one to have Dave, The Rumble 4x10 Cabinet is the only cabinet in the Rumble line not to have Neo speakers,..(they're 10" Fender Special Design) Being a fan of 4x10 cabinets I'm curious as to why Fender didn't put Neo 10" speakers in the 4x10 cabinet ...Though I have to say that The Bronco40 I bought for practicing back in December has 1x10" Fender Special Design speaker in it & it sounds good,(though a far cry from 4x10" but it's gives me an idea & with the Bronco & the Fuse hardware I can change the speaker configuration to 2x10 ,1x12, 2x12, 4x10 ETC though it still wouldn't be the same as having an actual 4x10 cabinet).....I find that of the 8 amp settings that the Bronco40 has, I find myself using the Rumble setting Bassman300 setting & SWR Red Head settings the most.
Funny thing I was in my Local Long-McQuade music store Thursday night & they had a few Rumble cabinets in the Bass guitar Dept,.......if only I read this thread before I went down I would of checked out the 2x8 & 1x12 Rumble Cabinets for you Linin.. :)

Two 1x12 cabs all the way. Love the 12's tone.

As an old man, I'll take multiple trips to carry my gear. In my younger days I could handle a 4x12 cabinet...them days is loooong goooone.

Imagine the 8x12" cab that the Who had originally built for them and trying to move that beast.

Maybe they decided to not have Neos in the 4x10" cab to keep the cost low on it, since it seems that Neos are more expensive. That cab is $100 cheaper, even though it's bigger. Usually, that's not the case with most cabs, it seems.

If you ever happen to go back there soon and have the time, you think you can check out the 2x8" cab on it's own, or another one? I've been real curious on how that one sounds, since I've never had the experience of playing through speaker that small. If I ever get the chance, and they are available, I'll do the same and post about it.
