HI ..I have a line on getting a used Bassman 400H (head only) amp.....I got the owner's manual and it is somewhat vague on the power...from what I understand (bit of a newb) it will put out 350 watts if I have a 4 ohm cab or 2 @ 8 ohms..and from what I understand it will put out about 1/2 of that if I only have 1@ 8 ohm....any thoughts on a) this Amp ...
and b) my math , because ...

Part II ...I have a line on a used David Eden D115 Bass Cabinet which says 200 watts and Z 8 (the Z has a horiz. line though it) so I am guessing that is an older Ohms symbol?

thinking this could be the start of a decent rig

any comments would be appreciated

thanks

The head figures and math sound right.

A 200 watt 8 Ohm cab with that head might be just a tad under-cabbed. But it will work. I wouldn't push it too hard. With a bass amp you can get near maximum output at half volume if you boost the bass and lower mids heavily, so you don't have to turn it wide open to push it to about 200 watts.

As for that alternate Ohm symbol, it could be a printing error. The typical Ohm symbol is the letter omega in the Greek alphabet. In Mac software to make the omega symbol you press "z" plus the "Opt" key simultaneously. Sounds like something went wrong there. Anyway not all font packages support the Greek alphabet, so when not represented by the Omega symbol usually Ohms will be represented by "R" as an abbreviation for resistance. Many makers find it better to just label it "OHMS" so there is no mistake. In transcendental meditation there is also a symbol for Ohm/Om that sort of looks like a "z" with squiggly lines around it. Maybe Eden is into the mystic arts or are trying to give some good vibrations to the Ohms of their cabs. I have looked at several Eden cab stickers and I'm not seeing that symbol you describe, I'm seeing the Omega character. Freaky Deaky.

Very useful info BrotherDave. It's hard to get the straight facts on amplification power...especially online.
