I no longer have anything I owned in the past, but I really didn't have a lot to begin with. I think the most I ever had at one point was three basses. If anything, I'd focus my resources towards a decent amplifier or two. I'd just figure I could take any beater bass fix it up a little and play it and a lot of my sound would come from my amp. That's always been the most important part of gear for me, a decent, working amplifier that will get me through the gig and I can hear what I'm playing. If I can have a nice bass to go with it, then that's a plus.

I also don't have any gear from my past,...... I went through a period from 1999-2005 where I didn't even play,........this happens to many of us.
By 2005 I was in a good head space & the urge to play was strong so I went to Long & McQuade music & bought a slightly used Ibanez Sound Gear Bass & a Fender combo Bassman 150 (I've since sold both these items 2 yrs ago) & then in May 2006 I bought a Geddy Lee Jazz Bass (that I still have) it's a great playing bass that I would never part with.....but anyway here we are in 2013 & I have an arsenal of 8 basses & an awesome SWR rig that consists of a Headlite, Amplite, a Goliath Jr. 2x10 cab, a Golight 4x10 cab & a Workingpro 4x10 cab, I also have a few MXR peadals........... I'm also more insprired than ever too.
I think you should take it step by step,......a good place to start with regard to an amp would be The Rumble 75, or The Rumble 150 or 350 combo's ( I'm a fan of the 350 combo with 2x10 speakers,........)
I'm also curious to see what Fender has in store for us this Fall with regard to their line up of Bass amps...will there be new gear or will it happen in late January after Namm 2014 ?,.......I think The Rumble is due for a tweak or upgrade.
I think if you're playing a decent beater bass or a new bass it's all the same as it's your style & technique that comes through an amp....IMO :)

I have the Rumble 350 combo. It's the first "big" amp I had since the late 90's, early 2000's. Before that, it was an Ampeg SVT 3 Pro and Carvin cabs. I never stopped playing music, but there were certain circumstances that happened in my life that made it difficult to play in band situations for a brief time. This contributed to the reason why I no longer have any of my old gear or anything else I owned. Basically, I walked away from my life with a suitcase and the clothes on my back and started over with nothing in another place. I didn't commit any crimes or kill anybody and on the run, so it wasn't that. :P I may have lost my stuff, but it's just material things that can be replaced (and have been) and I'm sure as a lot more happier now because I get to do what I want to do with my life.

I'm curious about what Fender is up to, as well. I'm sure there's probably something, since there seems to be a lot of bass stuff coming out these days. Eventually, I'd like to pick up another amp as a back up and now I'm looking into getting a Jazz Bass. Who knows after that. Maybe a fretless.

I didn't know you had a Rumble combo 350 ( maybe I did but forgot...... :? )
Sometimes it's healthier to walk away from what's not working in your life,...then take pause & start fresh. :)
Hey have you concidered getting a Geddy Lee Jazz Bass, Marcus Miller Jazz bass or Reggie Hamilton Jazz bazz ? the Geddy & Reggie retail for $980. & the Marcus retails for $1200. They're all MIM but they're all great affordable basses :)
I have all 3, (my Geddy & Marcus were made in Japan......production was moved to Mexico last year) I'm also looking for a back up bass head,.....there's lot's to choose from out there... :)

I'll check them out if I get an opportunity to. I'm not sure if I want to go with a 70's Jazz Bass style (like Geddy's) over a 60's style. Although, I did start out with a 77' Jazz Bass. I'll have to really sit down and play everything and compare. But judging from what I've heard on demos, I've been more partial lately to the 60's Jazz tonality. I looked at the Reggie Hamilton model and it does have some nice features. I'm not sure if I'd want a P and J pick up configuration, though. I'm thinking more of the lines of standard Jazz style, but you never know.

The '60's Jazz is a nice bass,... I bought the Reggie Hamilton Jazz Bass because I thought of it as a swiss army knife of Jazz basses with many tonal options & the P/J set would be good if I were in a band or live gig situation where I didn't want to take extra basses & it's MIM so I did't pay a lot (compared to some of my other basses) so I won't feel as bad if some thing were to happen to it at a gig.. :)
The Reggie Hamilton Jazz bass is esentially a hot rodded 1967 Jazz bass...from what I've read in a Reggie Hamilton interview....

I did notice it wasn't too expensive, since it was an artist model. How well does that detuner work? I used to play one song where I dropped down to D and I had to detune (so it was the last song in the set) and sometimes that was a pain in the arse. We haven't played that song recently, but it might be brought back in the set.

I actually don't use the D-tuner often & sometimes I forget it's even there,... :)
but that being said when I do use it I've had no problem,....the D-Tuner on this bass is from Hipshot. & the rest of the tuners are Fender 70's vintage stamped open gear tuners, the P-bass pickup is an American Series split coil pickup & the Jazz pickup is a Custom noiseless single coil pickup,....& of course there's the active/Passive option & the side mount jack,...... The neck has a nice satin feel,......all in all a lot of bang for the buck!!
I've said it here before,...but I'm surprised this bass doesn't get more love on the forum,... I think it's one of the better production basses to come out of Mexico
it's Fender's best kept secret .....worth every penny.. :)

Yeah, I've never noticed any mention of it, off hand. Then again I've never extensively searched. It seems the one model that I have ever seen mentioned the most was the Geddy Lee one. It could be that a lot of people aren't really aware of it.

Yeah The Geddy Lee Jazz bass is Fender's top selling bass....The list of Jazz basses that get mentioned here are as follows
1, Geddy Lee Jazz Bass
2, American Standard Jazz Bass
3,American Deluxe Jazz Bass
4,American Vintage Re-issue Jazz Bass
5, Jaco Pastorius Jazz Bass (mostly on my part... )
6, Vintage Jazz Basses
7, MIM Jazz Basses

On the P-Bass Side 3x P-basses that aren't getting much mention are
1,The Tony Franklin Fretted & Fretless P-basses ........ (another bang for the buck pair of basses)
I'm actually eying a Tony Franklin Fretless to add to the arsenal....
2, The Duff Mckagan signature P-Bass ( which is esentially a Jazz bass special from the mid '80's)
3, the newly released Nate Mendal P-Bass ( I think this is a kick $@! P-Bass with an awesomely thin neck..definitely worth a consideration)

& that's my 2 cents.... :)

That Tony Franklin is a really cool bass. It's the closest and only thing Fender makes for a fretless P-Bass these days. I don't know when they stopped making those and I know they made them in the 70's. That's another bass I always liked. In fact, I'd rather have a fretless P-Bass over a fretless Jazz Bass. It's too bad they don't make them anymore. This could be because of two favourite bassists of mine played them in the past and one still does. That's David J. from Bauhaus and Love & Rockets and Sting back when he was angry and didn't play lutes or whatever. :P I'm just ribbing him, he still can play the bass rather well, I think. I loved the sound of that bass. A good example of it is a Police live video where he had it cranked through his Ampeg 8x10"s and 18" cabs. Pure devastation. Yeah, a fretless P-Bass would be a nice reissue, I think.

I think Fender's reasoning is if they already sell the Tony Franklin Fretless P-Bass there's no need to offer a 2nd Fretless P-bass.....The Tony Franklin P-Bass is not that expensive all things considered as it retails for $1699.00

It could be that and they have a fretless Jazz model already. I suppose fretless might not be the biggest selling model, too. You really don't see a lot of people playing them. Then again, that's another reason I like them.

You're right the Fretless bass is a bit more of a niche instrument,......there's definitely more people playing Fretted basses,....Fender probably feels they've got the basses covered
by offering 4 x Fretless basses, The American standard Fretless Jazz bass, The Jaco Pastorius Jazz Bass, Tony Franklin Fretless bass, & the Custom Shop reliced Jaco Pastorius Jazz Bass........this version of the Jaco bass beside having the relic treatment done to it,.has a Rosewood fretboard that's heavily expoy coated & 2x Custom Shop '60's single coil Jazz pickups ( that standard artist model has a set of Vintage Jazz pickups.)
I should mention that the 2012/2013 American Standard Fretless Jazz bass also has Custom Shop '60's Jazz bass pickups.
