Check out these Alnico bass speakers that Weber Speakers is thinking about producing:

http://taweber.powweb.com/weber/aba10.htm

For those unfamiliar with Alnico, it is a kind of magnet used to make speakers and pickups. Most modern bass speakers are made from ceramic, which can sound lifeless and stale, and when pushed hard go from clean to unpleasant harsh distortion very quickly.

With Alnico, the speaker gradually distorts in a warm and pleasant way as you turn up the amp's volume. They are much more pleasant to the ear.

If you want these speakers to be produced, please go to the bottom of this Weber Speaker suggestion page and request the speakers with the link above:

Most bass amps nowadays run pretty clean. I'm not sure if smooth breakup is an important factor in a bass amp driver. There are exceptions of course and there are even bass amps with actual dirty channels  which in my view are akin to sacrelege. Every song I've ever heard in which the bassist is playing with overdrive sounds like shyte to my ears. I think I'll just stick with my ceramics.

Just think of how awesome a guitar player you could have been by now if you had only spent the last 10 years practicing instead of obsessing over pickups and roasted maple necks.

EXACTLY! Overdrive through the amp sounds like garbage. But speaker breakup sounds 1,000 times better and much more natural. When have you ever heard a bass that sounds distorted because of the speakers breaking up? Probably never because no one makes alnico bass speakers. And speaker breakup doesn't necessarily mean audible distortion. It can add compression, smoothness and warmth while still being clean.

Tell it to Jack Bruce, Jack Casady, and Felix Pappalardi.

Especially Felix Pappalardi. He worked that sound into his Sunns. His live sound was incredible. He played a Gibson EB-1.

Oh, wow. Looks like they took down the link. I am told that they still intend to produce these speakers, so please click the second link in my original post and ask they make alnico bass speakers.

I spend all my money in a quest for clean bass. If I want to distort, that capability is there, but not something that my ears like. Would rather it not be speaker breakup when it does happen. JMO

I can only imagine how good these would sound played with a nice, tube bass amp!
