I have searched on here and other sites and have yet to find a satisfactory answer to a question I have. I bought the Fender Bronco 40 for ease of use around the home and for band practice (2 acoustics through small amps and un-mic'd drums so it works fine). I love the diversity the amp offers and especially like the Fuse program for setting up my amp models just how I like them. Not having to lug a pedal board everywhere is great too. For bar gigs, we have a mixing board and p.a.s so it works great as a personal monitor for those shows. I think the Bronco would make a great bass head to run through a cab. So here's my question - The Bronco's power handling is 40w with an output impedance at 8 ohms. Why can't I use the XLR output to run to, say, a Fender Rumble 112 cabinet that has 8 ohms impedance? The reason I ask is everywhere I have read people say it won't work but the other day at the store I did just that and nothing melted or blew up. Is this something that over time it would fry the Bronco or what am I missing? I will say that I didn't necessarily take the time to compare how loud the amp is alone vs. how much louder it is with the cab attached as there were a lot of people in the store and I didn't want to hurt their soft eardrums. Thanks.

The 40 watts and 8 ohms are all part of the internal speaker and amp parts, so there is no need to concern yourself with either of these numbers regarding the xlr output. The xlr is a signal out only and is dependent on another amplifier and speaker to do anything. The xlr line out only cares about the right cable to hook it up. Whether you connect it to a 2,4,8 or 16 ohm amp does not matter. It cannot run a speaker on its own.

BTW. I am playing through a Bronco in my avatar picture.

Thanks for the response. My next question then is how was I getting sound out of the cabinet? Sorry for the dumb questions?

I had the same question, but didn't want to complicate things. I would have to guess they were putting the xlr output through some sort of amplification. A powered cabinet would work. Do you know what kind of cab you were playing through? The signal from the xlr is so weak I put it through a preamp to boost it. Straight into my power amp produces an anemic result.

That was what confused me afterwards too because I was too stupid to look to see if it was a powered cab but I thought it was just a Fender Rumble 112 cab, which I don't think is powered. I know he plugged the XLR directly into the back of the cab and not through anything else. Maybe I can swing by tomorrow to confirm which cab it was and take my Bronco with me.

That would be helpful to understanding how that all worked. Please share when you find out. the Rumble 12" cab only has 1/4" inputs and would be unable to accept an xlr input.

Will do. If it's a powered cab would the Bronco work basically as a head?

Yes. The 10" speaker will also be operative unless an 1/8 inch plug is put into the headphone jack to silence it.

And it was an XLR to 1/4" microphone cable that we used, which may have helped since a mic cable boosts the signal, I think.

Stopped by the store last night and spoke with the same guy I had seen last week. He said he did daisy chain it through a head before going to the cab. Mystery solved. Wiping egg off my face.

Just for future reference, the XLR output on the Bronco is a low impedance microphone level output. In addition to patching into a microphone preamp channel on a mixer, it can also be used to feed a signal to another combo or amp, but you would need a matching transformer in the line to do that. It isn't that big a deal. They are pretty cheap. I use one called a LITTLE IMP that works fine for that.
