Hi Folks,
Does anyone out there know the wattage of the old 2-12 bassman cabs? I had a BF bassman in the 60's with two 2-12 cabs and I never opened them for any reason. Sweet bass rig!
I just built a Sunn 2-15 for my 72" SVT and want to build either a 4-10 or 4-12 cab for my
68' AB165 Bassman head. I know they had to be low wattage but wanted to ask if anyone knew. If anyone has any and would maybe like to do some dealing...I have an Altec 421-A 15" 100 watt LF driver in excellent condition.
If you try and push a 40-50 watt head into 60 watt cabs or higher the amp will go into clipping and just sound awful. Not even good for grunge!
Anyway hope there is some good info out there.

Could you cite your source for that nugget of wisdom?

Good info is "out there". You just need to find a credible source.

My own experience and an electronics engineer. I took my bassman head and plugged it into a mid size 2-12 68' Fender bandmaster cab and it sounded like it should. Plug it into my Sunn clone that is 600 watt and it blaps or clips at the same volume levels. My SVT of course is 300..max and it doesn't clip. Plug into a cab that is only 50 watss and guess what happens? Are you playing a guitar or a bass through the Champion? A 40 watt amp uses a large amount of it's power to just get the damned cone to move with a high wattage speaker.....back when Conrad told me the 2 older square back Eminence 15's would not work in the cab was not true. They were too high a wattage for a 40 watt amp...!

5 watt Champion - Guitar. I have a 69 bassman head for bass.

I've never heard of the clipping problem but I have heard of peoples home stereo amps overheating trying to drive speakers that are rated to high.

One of the punchiest bass rigs I've ever heard belonged to a bassist I played with "way back when"......A '67 Dual Showman head through a Sunn 200S cab stuffed with a pair of EV-SRO15's (an 85-watt amp wired to a 300-watt load). It was awesome!

There are nuggets of wisdom and some are but nuggets. Not good to bite into the latter.

I've actually plugged my '69 Bassman into the Rumble 4x10 cabinet (1000 watts (Program), 500 watts (Continuous) Handling Capability) and not had a problem. Maybe I need to push it harder.

I think you need to research this a bit more.

Decades ago I remember pushing a 2 x 15 Dual Showman cab with my 6-watt Vibro Champ. It sounded monstrously meaty with the amp dimed. Rolling the volume back produced some real nice cleans, albeit not all that loud.

YES. One of my current home setups is a blackface champ, which I put a master volume in, driving a Fender 4x12 cabinet loaded with 4 EV-12L. It is surprisingly loud (which is why I put the master volume in it!). It sounds wonderfully huge and full. I love the sound of a class A 6V6 output.

You'll love this one, Thompal......

That's my 1980 non-verb silverface Princeton, converted to a piggyback configuration and driving a pair of JBL K120's in a home-built Showman cab. It can confortably hold it's own with an AC30TB or a Super Reverb.

I believe I (and others) have hooked the little Champ 600 up to a larger cab. In my case a big ole Fender VT-15 Bassman cabinet. It has no problem pushing those two 15 inch speakers.
