Hello!

Since I am Norwegian, my English is not really top notch, but I will try my best to make you understand my problem :)

I have been playing bass for a good while now, and I own a Fender Mexico P-bass with Seymour Duncan SPB-3 pickups, and have finnaly decided to go for a Fender amp! :)

My main playing style on bass is with a pick, since most of the music I play is music like Blink-182, Sum 41, Green Day and others like them. Therefore I'm looking for an amp that can give me that punchy pop-punk sound when I play!

I have been looking at the Fender Rumble 350 head and the 410 cab for a while now, since I have played through an Rumble 30 combo a few times, and I can make it sound pretty much like I want it to.

But my question for you all is; what amp should I go for?
Should I go for one of the combos, a stack with 1 410 and a 350 head, or a 350 head with two other cabinets? I really have no idea what would be the best combination for my playing style.

I should probably mention that I don't have too much money to spend atm, So I dont think I could go for any bassman amp's :(
I should also mention that I plan on using the amp for practise, and some small venue gigs. :D

I really hope someone could help me out! :)

Thanks!

Hello EinerHjar,

Welcome to the Fender Bassman's Lounge, and great first post.

The least expensive option for you would be the Rumble 150 Combo. It is plenty loud enough for band practice and bar gigs. Good sound & easy to transport.

The Rumble 350 head & 410 cabinet is a great choice. If you can afford it, I would go for it! Plenty of good clean punchy power. Great tone with solid lows. Wonderful stage presence & sexy looks. Moves a lot of air and is LOUD.

The Rumble 350 Combo is never a bad choice. Which ever option is most affordable to you.
You really can't go wrong with a Rumble amp.

Welcome to the forum.

The Rumble 350 combo is also a nice option with plenty of power. It's cheaper than the 350 head with cab, and also self-contained. The only thing is the you have 2 tens instead of 4 tens. I'm not sure if that would make a tremendous difference, but at least I can attest to what the combo can do.

Linnin is right about the Rumble series. It's an excellent choice, either way.

Welcome to the Fender Form EinerHjar.

Combos are handy. Stacks are more flexible. A 4x10 is twice as loud as a 2x10 which works out to be about 3dB in volume.

With a head and cab arrangement instead of a combo you can use a small 1x12 cab at rehearsals and very small gigs and then drag out a full stack of cabs for an outdoor gig. So it really boils down to how much you want to spend and how much flexibility you need. I highly prefer one amp that is all purpose to a bunch of gear.

With PA systems being so advanced these days with crossovers, huge powerful subwoofers and about 2,000 watt mains being more or less the basic outdoor PA system a huge stack is becoming more and more a thing of the past for me. I haven't moved my stack in about 2 years.

Wow, if the 4x10 is twice as loud, then that thing must really crank! I almost got that rig instead of the combo, but it was an extra $200 that wasn't in the budget at the time and the combo is more than enough, right now. Heck, if I ever need more, I'll just get another one and slave it. It's probably a good idea to have an extra one for a back up, anyway. Just in case.

I got my Rumble 4x10 initially to go with my '69 Bassman. Since I don't like taking the antique out often I opted for the 350 head rather than the combo and the cab gets used for both. At different times...

Those 4x10s are sweet with both heads.

How does it transport? I know they're not like the old refrigerator-size cabs from the days of yore, thanks to modern technology. I can attest to this from the 350 combo. It weighs roughly the same as an old Peavey Basic 50 combo I have, and it fits in the back seat of a mid-size SUV. It's not bad to carry, considering.

The head has a gig bag. The cab is about 25 inch high, 24 inch wide and about 14 inch deep. Fits in the back of the Impala just fine. Better than the VT 15 cab. And with the side handles, it's not that hard to lift. A Twin Reverb is harder to lift with its one handle. And the back seat of the Impala flips forward, so I don't have to lift it that far.

The only drawback is the weight, 76 lbs. The Pro 4x10 neo weighs in at 55 but is $700 price tab. Rumble 4x10 is under $300. Both come with casters. The real deal maker was the fact that the Rumble 4x10 is 4 ohm and the Pro 4x10 neo is 8 ohm. My vintage Bassman likes to see 4 ohm.

Sounds good. It's not that much bigger than the combo. Yeah, the 4 ohm thing is good, especially if you just want to run one cab. I wonder how those 12 and 8 inch cabs are? It's strange they cost more, but are 8 ohms. You'd think the 4x10" would be more expensive. They don't say what the head is in 8 ohms, but I suspect probably around 200 watts, maybe 175. At least, most 350 watt heads in the past usually were rated 200 watts at 8 ohms.

Very close Paul! I just looked up the schematic to get the power ratings for the Rumble 350. At 100Hz it puts out 400 watts @4 ohms, and 221 watts @ 8 ohms. That's excellent! :)

The specs in my book say 370 watts max. But Fender was always a little conservative. As for what it "eats" 450 watts to 950 watts or 4.75 - 7.9 amps.

Part no. prefix on the 4x10 is 234. On the 2x8 and 1x12 it is 224. I think the 4x10 is assembled in Vietnam if the back plate is accurate. Not sure about the other two.

Ahhh, the 2x8 and 1x12 are neodymium speakers, the 4x10 is not.

2x8 Eminence 28 lb, 1x12 Eminence 24 lb, 4x10 Fender Special Design spkrs 76 lb. Now, there is your dollar difference. And I doubt that I will ever get loud enough to blow those four speakers.

I prefer the sound of Alnico. I just rather move Neos.

While the 76 lb Fender Rumble 4x10 cab may seem heavy compared to a small combo keep in mind that other brands of 4x10 non-Neo cabs are even heavier. Avatar's Alnico 4x10 comes in at 95 lbs. I have an Avatar Delta (Alnico/non-Neo) 2x10 cab that weighs almost as much as the Rumble 4x10. So it really isn't all that heavy, compared to other 4x10 non-Neo cabs.

The Rumble 2x8 and 1x12 cabs are 8 Ohms each so you can stack the two cabs for a 4 Ohm load. This arrangement more compactly approximates the popular three-quarter stack (1x15 +2x10) arrangement which has long been my indoor bass stack setup. Outdoors I greatly prefer all 10's for more drive but indoors the 15 really makes a bass sound like it should. When you move the 1x15 outdoors it is way less effective.

I bought myself a two wheeled, pnuematic tired hand-truck that has slider rails on the back like a mover's hand-truck. I think it was about $45 or $50 and it was a great investment. Takes at least 80% of the work out of moving heavy cabinets around.

You want one with wheels far enough apart that it's not side-to-side tippy.

Just think of how awesome a guitar player you could have been by now if you had only spent the last 10 years practicing instead of obsessing over pickups and roasted maple necks.

Yeah, I need that for the Twin Reverb. :)
