I still have the BXR 400 amp and BXR 4x10 cabinet that I purchased back in 1990. It was one of the best purchases I ever made. It's been incredibly reliable and has oodles of power. I used it night after night and could always count on it to be there. I also have a 1x15 cabinet for it but I found that it was powerful enough with just the 4x10 to cover almost any situation. I call it "The Thunderhead". Anybody else out there still using a BXR 400?

The entire BXR series was really good! Durable stuff!

Yeah, a friend of mine had a little BXR combo that I played once at a gig and it was a cool little amp. I let him use my 400 once and he said he was scared to death of it because it was like going from a Cessna to a 747. Once he figured out it wasn't going to bite him I think he liked it. Another friend of mine used my 400 for a while when I wasn't gigging and I think he was really sorry to see it go when I eventually had to reclaim it. He ran it through a 1x18 because he loves super deep bass and he also admired it for it's seemingly endless power, the equalizer and, of course, the low boost.

You know, I had one very briefly when they still made those, but unfortunately I fell for the Ampeg hype and traded it for one of those. I wish I didn't do that, in retrospect. I can see why you still have yours. Good stuff. I had a BXR 300 combo, too which was nice, but foolishly got rid of.

I've seen a few of those heads online going for cheap these days. Even though I'm happy with my current Fender amp, I wouldn't mind picking one up with some cabs to add to the collection.

Ah, regrets, we all have them. My first real bass amp was a Peavey TNT 100 and I've often regretted trading it in. If I had traded it for the BXR 400 it wouldn't sting as much, instead I traded it in for a underpowered GK combo amp that the BXR later replaced. I plan to keep the BXR come hell or high water.

I know what you mean. I got rid of a lot of stuff I shouldn't have when I was younger. Stupid impulse buys or whatnot. I suppose you get bored and want to change things, but you can wind up getting screwed in the long run. Well, at least I've learned not to do that anymore. I'm definitely keeping my amp, as well. I might get another one as a back up, though. It's a good thing to have, if you can afford to.

Yeah, I always like to possess least 2 of everything that I need to play a show - 2 basses (at least), 2 amplifiers, 2 or more cabinets, etc.. Otherwise I feel naked. Durability is a must - there's no point in having a backup piece of equipment if it's not reliable.

Yeah, reliability is the key. I try to pack everything but the kitchen sink. Batteries (if you have effects or active pick ups,) flashlight (very handy,) and screwdriver. Tape is also handy. I don't have a decent extra amp at the moment, but at least I can go into the board if all else fails and hope for some monitors. Hopefully, this won't happen, but you never know.
