I was looking around for a 2x12 cabinet for bass, and found nothing. I have a 100 watt bass head and a 30 watt bass head that I use for the studio. Would any of the guitar 2x12 cabinets work? Does fender plan on making any "12 configurations for bass?

I would not use a guitar cab. The setup is all wrong. You need a bass cab.

Short of finding an old Fender Bassman 2x12 cab to reload you can buy a repro of a Fender 2x12 Bassman cab from Mojotone for $290 and load it with a pair of 8 Ohm Eminence 12" bass speakers which will run about $280 for the pair. This would be a 300 Watt 4 Ohm cab. So you are looking at about $570 if you go that route. The Mojotone repro cab is here: http://www.mojotone.com/amp-parts/Blackface-Bassman-Style-2x12-Extension-Cabinet?search=Blackface
There are several sources for the raw 12 inch Eminence bass speakers. They are Neos which weigh barely over 4 lbs each. The cab weighs 33 lbs so you would be looking at a total weight of under 42 lbs with a loaded Mojotone. The cosmetics of the Mojotone repro cab match the old tube Fender stuff.

A better option than that would be a more modern cab that was computer designed to be a bass cab. I would suggest looking at the Avatar B212 2x12 cab which starts at $389 and goes up depending on cosmetic options selected. http://www.avatarspeakers.com
Avatar has several grill options available at extra cost including a Fender style cloth grill. Personally I like the stock metal ones fine. I'm not crazy about the stock rat fur carpet covering though and would suggest upgrading away from that stock covering if you can afford it. The Line-X option is tough stuff like a pickup truck spray on bedliner, but not as pretty as some of the Tolex colors.

Hi Dave,

I was thinking about the B212 for my 69 Bassman. I just wondered if 1,000 Watt handling capability was too much for the poor Bassman to push. I use my VT15 Bassman cabinet for guitar but Fender never made a really good bass cabinet back in those days. And very few of the somewhat good ones have survived the last 40 years.

So, I have been looking at the Avatar B212 in Black Tolex w/Fender grill cloth. Since they are Factory Direct, I'm wondering if you know anyone who has tried this...

Yes I own several Avatar cabs and would buy more if I need them. I don't anticipate needing more cabs though.

Since your power amps are pretty old school power, maybe you should keep looking for an old school cab. They show up around here on a regular basis. Sunn or Fender 2x12 bass cabs or 2x15's would be good. Even a peavey.

Yeah, I'm almost done fixing/restoring the VT15 which is the perfect size for the 69 head. Original CTS speakers are still in good shape. The baffle was the problem.

But it is still old and fragile. Would probably use a B212 for traveling and keep the VT15 for recording. I could try a Rumble cab as well. The new Fender Pro cabs are nice but carry a hefty price tag. Most of the bassists working at the big box stores have no idea what vintage is. I get some strange looks when I go in to try out a cab.

If it is vintage looks then Mojotone. If modern sound, then Avatar. If inexpensive, then Rumble. I don't think you can beat that Rumble 1x12 for the money, so just stack 2 of them. I'd have no problem with any of those cabs with your current amps or with more powerful amps down the road.

The old Fender 60's/70's cabs were not exactly computer designed and something more modern would be more efficient and more full range. I think that is why you don't see them used around much for bass.

Yeah, the Rumble 1x12 and 4x10 both look like good cabinets. Both have tweeter/horn which the 60's cabs never had. 4x10 is better matched as far as impedance but the 1x12 would give a sound closer to "vintage." As I said, the new Pro cabs are sweet but we are just coming up on their first year and a half of road use. I really want to see how those hold up. So far I've heard good things.

The OP could do a lot worse than a vintage Sunn 200S cab. Pound for pound, they're still one of the best-engineered bass enclosures ever made for an "old-school" 2 x 15 configuration.

Especially with a Sunn 2000S head on top of it.

My brother plays his '66 Precision Bass through a '75 Model T wired to a pair of K140-stuffed 200S cabs. It's awwwwzzzzzommmme!
