I am in the process of buying the Fender Rumble 350 Head amp; yet due to budget constraints, I can only afford to buy one of the two light-weight cabinets, the 1 x 12 or the 2 x 8.

Which one should I buy first? And why do you recommend that one first?

Thanks in advance!!!

I'd go with the 1 X 12 first. Bigger bottom end, and meatier mids you can sink your teeth into. In fact I'd get two of them, and zero 2 X 8's. The 12's are plenty punchy. The Fender videos do sound good, and I've heard others. Sadly I've not played through such a rig, but I'd like to! Either way it's sweet, so enjoy! :)

If you are on a budget and want to save some $$$ - why not go with the 4 X 10 cabinet?... it pushes more 'air' than the other two that you mentioned and is an excellent match for the 350 head, but it is 50 pounds heavier than the other two. I tested all three versions about 8 months ago and the 4 X 10 had the best sound of all three. Keep in mind that room accoustics have to be taken into consideration when testing, so try to position the cabinets in the same exact location and direction while testing and stand in the same location while testing each. You may be pleasantly surprised as to what you hear coming out of the 4 X 10.

If you really DO need a 'light weight', then the 1 X 12 will work OK...

Keep us posted on your choice and results.

I own the Rumble 350 and the 2X8 and 1X12. I think they are an incredible combination! Great tone, loads of power and easy to transport. I've also used the 350 head with a 4X10 cab , and it sounded great, as well. A really big sound. And I used the 350 head with my neo 610 and it absolutely killed! It is truely a great head. So you're off to a good start. I'd say, if you are going to go with the 2X8, 1X12 set up, get the 1X12 first. That way, you have some flexibilty for your next cab. The 2X8 or another 1X12. Good luck.

Thank you all for your posts!! They have been very helpful!!

I received this email from Fender on the same question: "I would personally get the 2x8 first as this will give you good bottom end, tight response and it is moving a bit more air producing greater overall volume. The 112 is good if you’re more of a bottom end player but I feel works the best for lower frequency reinforcement when coupled with the 2x8."

Today I went to a local music store to test the 350 with the 1x12 (they did not have the 2x8). I really liked it, in spite of the front grill rattling a lot (the attendant told me how to fix that; I read a review expressing the same issue and asking Fender to replace the metal grill with a cloth one).

The attendant also said the same thing you all did, except Fender, get the 1x12 first. He also told me that if I play mainly in the low end of the bass and play with a 4-string bass, it is better if I get a second (1x12) and no (2x8). Only if I play a 5 or 6-string bass I should consider getting the 2x8 as a second cabinet.

Once again, thanks!!! :D

If it were me, I'd probably go with two 12"s, if I wanted two cabs. If not, I'd go with the 4x10" cab for just one cab at 4 ohms. Then again, 10" speakers are the smallest I've ever used (and not until recently) as a main speaker set up. I've been more old school in the past with 15"s and even 18"s (which I still love.) All in all, it's ultimately up to you to decide what you like. You may actually like the 8"s better for your sound.

Okay, here goes. I have a plethora of bass amps (tube and solid state) and cabinets. I own TWO Fender Rumble 4x10 cabinets along with ONE Rumble 350 head. DO NOT use the Rumble 350 with TWO 4x10 cabs ... the impedance will be 2 ohms and not such a good thing. Use the Rumble 350 with ONE 4x10 cabinet.

Now, why TWO 4x10 cabinets? Because I have an Acoustic 600 head (runs on 2 ohms) and a Peavey NitroBass 450 head (again running on 2 ohms). You get some serious thumping combinations with the Peavey or the Acoustic and the two 4x10s.

Another interesting combo is my Bassman 135 (tube) and the two 4x10 cabinets. The Bassman 135 is the only Fender tube head I know of that can handle, safely, two 4 ohm cabs. I can also play my Bassman 100 and Bassman 50 (both tube heads) through ONE 4x10 cabinet. Lots of combos (and fun) to choose from.

The 4x10 cabinets are very nice. One minor detail ... I carefully peeled of the sticker from the grill on the second one and it pulled off some black paint. A Sharpie pen was good for touch up, and I have written Fender (no response yet), but be careful peeling off the sticker.

The 4x10 is a BARGAIN and so is either the Rumble 150 or 350. Go for it.

I have to agree. The Rumble 4x10 cabinet is killer! It's also a heavy beast. But no heavier than my old Bassman VT 15 cabinet. That's why I went with the 4x10, it's 4 Ohm and I can use it with my vintage Bassman as well as my Rumble 350.

You do have other options for the Rumble 350 head. You can easily plug in the Bassman Pro 4x10 Neo which is under 55 lb but will cost about $700. It is also an 8 Ohm cabinet so you can always add a 1x12 later if you like. Since the Rumble head is just a black box, it will look good with any grill type (the Pro line has the vintage blackface styling.) http://www.fender.com/products/bassmanpro/models.php?partno=2249400000

My suggestion, get the 1x12 and later go back and pick up a cabinet with multiple 10 combination.

That would be cool if they would make a 2x12" cab in 4 ohms.

I would suggest the more classic 1x15 and 2x10 cab arrangement over the 1x12 and 2x8. The one you are considering is smaller and lighter but.....not me.

I'd use the 1x15 plus 2x10 or I'd use a single 4x10. 12 inch speakers are for practice amps.

Pure Unadulterated Bullshit. Eminence twelve inch NEO woofers are an excellent choice for great tone.

What do you think of 4x12" speaker cabs for bass? I've never had the chance to play through one, but I remember them being made from time to time. I think SWR made one at one time and I know Peavey did.

I suppose if you had the skill and resources, you can build any kind of cabinet you want, with any speaker configuration. That's another choice, albeit not the most practical one. It would be fun to do, I think.

I have two cabs a 1x15 and a 4x8 with a tweeter. The 4x8 is one of the better sounding cabs I have ever heard. I like the idea of the 2x8 cab but it is expensive with the neos. I also have not heard it. Conceptually, that cab and my 1x15 would be a great club gig amp.

I think Noel Redding and Jack Bruce used double stacks of those cabs, 4x12, in the early days. Maybe they just look like them. They were Marshalls.

With the amounts you are spending, or going to be spending, I would consider a Rumble 350 Combo. It's a brut of an amp in one package, and the two tens move some good air. It's also a ported cab, and it has casters.
