I bought a used Bassman 60 combo about 6 months ago, for my son. It seemed to work fine but lately I've noticed buzzing coming from the amp. I've also noticed it geting louder as time goes on. He has also complained of getting shocked when he's playing and singing into a mic.
Couple of questions I have:
Is this a common problem that I can easily be fixed myself?
Should I take it to a tech?
Is it even worth spending $$ on it (I only spent $90 on it)?

Thanks,
Armando

Buzzing from the amp and getting shocked , probably mean a ground problem on the amp. From the amp, have you a 3 prong wire to your wall outlet ? Probably not or the ground plug is broken or not working.
Did your wall outlet is grounded too ?

Did you use another amp and same gear at this place with no problem before ? if yes, check Bassman 60's 3 prong wire.

Thanks, I'll look into that.

One thing I noticed, the buzzing only happens when I have something plugged into the front input jack. I've already tried another bass and even a couple of guitars. I've also tried a couple of different cables.
If I remove the input cable and turn on the amp. It's completely quite.

Ok it is not the same , if it only buzz with instrument plug in it. This is not the 3 prong wire the problem . This amp has a printed circuit , you can't work inside . But if you tried some guitars / bass ( wich work well on another amp ) the problem is in the amp.
I can't say more.

I guess that brings up my final question...

Is it worth fixing? I called up my repair shop and they charge $65 just for diagnostics. I paid only $90.

My suggestion would be to "trade it in" on a NEW Rumble 75 or Rumble 150. Both are excellent products.

There may be a power supply issue with that Bassman 60 OR someone repaired it using after market power supply components. If a user is getting shocked, RED TAG that amp and get something new with a warranty. It is dangerous and potentially deadly if someone touches the metal panel or metal on a patch cord and a regular grounded appliance in the same room. NOT GOOD !!

Normally if you get shocked it is a 3 prong outlet problem. And maybe this is cause de buzz.

Armandidiaz , You can only ask to a tech to check if on the 3 prong plug power cord, the ground is ok . This is a 1 minute check . An ohmmeter test probe the chassis of the amp and other test probe to the ground pin on the 3 prong .

Maybe your amp need only a new power cord

Thanks, I'll try another pwr cable, I've got dozens laying around.
One more thing I noticed....

If I turn the amp on with no input cable it's quiet.
If I turn it on with an input cable, and no instrument, it turns to a loud humm.

Same sound as if you would take a working amp plug an input cable and hold the other end with your hand. Wondering if I have a faulty input jack?

Possible that the ground on the jack is loose or broken...HOWEVER, this STILL does not explain the possible shock hazard. There is a power transformer in that amp and there should be NO difference of potential from chassis to a known good electrical ground in the same room - even with a bad power cord. PLEASE - be extra careful as you are troubleshooting!!

Hum with input cable and NO instrument !!! It is like an antenna , this is normal. The hum must deasapear with a guitar plug at the cable end .

No cable no hum; normal

ALRIGHT!!!

It seems as it is the pwr cable. I turned the amp around and the pwr cable just fell off. I tried connecting it back and it was wobbly. I replaced it with a nice thick pwr cable I got from work from an old server. The loud buzzing went away. I connected back the old cable and the buzzing would come and go as you wobble it.
Now all I hear is quiet buzz. I unscrewed the electronics and slid it out. I carefully connected the pwr and turned it on. The buzz is coming from the transformer. I tighten the mounting screws and it quieted down a little. Should be good for now.

THANKS ALL!!!

Thanks I'll try that.

This setup is mostly for my 11yr old son. I bought it so he can learn (and I screw around with it alot also). I'm more of a 6 string guy. He plays a lot of classic rock and grunge. What kind of settings do you recommend? Should I still disconnect the horn? He's playing a Squier Jazz and and Ibanez with hugh humbukers.
