My amp has suddenly stopped working. It makes this really loud buzzing noise whenever the bass is plugged in, or even when the wire is plugged in to the amp but not plugged into the bass. And whenever I go closer to the input jack of the amp, the buzz will get louder and louder. So there's still sound coming out, but like I said, it's not picking up my bass.

Image
I took out the main board of the amp and in the top right corner, there are two little metal pieces where the wire for the input jack passes through. If I approach those two metal pieces the buzz gets even louder and if I touch the second metal piece (with something) it makes a REALLY loud crackling noise; like I touched the nerve of the problem so I'm assuming the problem is there but I just don't know what it is and what I can do?

Anyone have an idea?

Sounds like a grounding issue somewhere along the line, but I have seen bad electrolytic filter capacitors in the secondary of the power supply, located after the bridge rectifier, do the same thing. Unless you are trained and well versed in electronic troubleshooting, you may wish to have a certified technician look at it. This type of repair usually would involve an oscilloscope to see where the distortion is first coming into the circuitry.

Just one question, though... is the hum present with the volume control turned to minimum or does the hum get louder as the volume control is turned up? Usually if it is a power supply or filtering issue, the hum is there no matter where the volume control is set.

The hum is always present, but in general yeah the hum gets louder as the volume control is turned up.

It sounds like filtering in the power supply and/or the voltage regulator circuit. Take it to a technician who is familiar with Fender amps to have the repair done properly. Best of luck and let us know how things turn out.
