Have bassman amp. Not sure the year late 60's early 70's
50 watts. Want to use it with a 4 speaker cabinet 10" guitar speakers and run my telecaster through the set up.

In simple terms, how does one choose the correct speaker, power, ohm rating

To keep your amp healthy, you'll need a 4-ohm load. In practical terms, that's four 16-ohm speakers wired in parallel. Or conversely, four four-ohm speakers configured in series-parallel. Your drivers will fare well if they're rated for a minimum of 25 watts each.

Best of luck, HTH

Arjay

Agree with Sir Arjay and would like to add two things to it.

Since you are using 4x10's, this is a beautiful opportunity to craft a signature tone by mixing speaker models in the cab in pairs. Say something like two Celestion G10 Gold series Alnicos and two Celestion Heritage Series Greenbacks for a balance of Alnico's clarity with the Greenback's warm overdriven response. You can use whatever two sets you like but the key here is to mix 2 pairs of speakers with diametrically opposed tonal characteristics to fashion a personal signature tone by using only one cab. In the end you'll get a far more versatile cab than you would by using four of the same speakers.

Another part of the tonal equation can be cab design. An open back design will channel more of the mids out the back of the cab while a closed back design cab can give you not only harder hitting mids but a more solid bottom end. I don't recommend front porting on a guitar cab.

Here is a recommended wiring diagram link and like Arjay said, 4 Ohms is a good idea here but you could also go with 8 Ohms. 4 Ohms would probably be more efficient by around 3db:

"Sir Arjay", LOLOL

+1 re the balance of this response. The trick will be to find the right pair of pairs but the result of careful research and testing will be sonic nirvana.

Rawk on!

Folks thanks for the input.
Great minds think alike, I guess, as I was looking to mix some of those very same speakers. This should be fun.

Will reply down the road on the success of this endeavor.

I have been playing through an early '70's Super reverb that I am holding for an old friend and those four 10's make a huge sound.

Again, thanks and I will let you know how this project turns out!
