So I've had this amp for years with no problems.
Previously it was solely used for small club gigging but
now it has turned into my practice amp at home.

Just tried to use the headphone jack output for the first time
and it doesn't cut the signal to the speaker. It
plays through both the headphones and the cabinet
making it utterly useless.

Am I missing something completely obvious or do you
think it's had a wiring issue the whole time?

Any help is greatly appreciated.

Actually that is normal. Plug in the phones, then UNPLUG the SPEAKER. Sounds nuts I know but that is what the manual says to do on page EIGHT section U. Here is the link to the manual: http://support.fender.com/manuals/bass_amplifiers/Bassman_250_%282005%29_manual.pdf

Just looked at a schematic and it appears that when the speaker is UNPLUGGED the amp is perfectly safe on models made 2005 and later!

Oh jeez... Thank you for the answer!
Sorry I didn't get back sooner.

I suppose I just assumed it would have bypassed the speaker automatically.
I suppose now I should have never assumed anything.

That is a very unusual headphone arrangement for sure. If I had not read it in the manual or gone over the schematic to see that it was a safe practice, I would never have tried it in a 1,000 years. You are right, it is an unconventional function!
