Yeah, they're still around and kicking. I do believe Fender still uses some Jensen speakers in some of their amps. I haven't really heard anything about their bass speakers, other than I know they have them. I'm sure they are just as good as the guitar stuff, though.

I liked the price of a Jensen, as compared to a JBL. I never seemed to have had the cash needed for the JBL. So Jensen worked ok for my stuff back then.

From what I've seen, they aren't hugely expensive speakers to begin with, so I'd say they're a pretty good deal to get.

Jensen's were a bit closer in price to the higher priced ones back then. They were more of the mid range priced ones, separating the cheaper speakers, and the more expensive say JBL, and up.

You ever use Radio Shack speakers? I don't know if they still make them (considering Radio Shack has more or less gone by the wayside, although they still have a website to shop on,) but I remember they had 15" speakers you could buy. When I started playing bass, my friend who got me into it, and was a guitarist, built a 2 x 15" bass cab using those speakers that he got from them, and it was made from solid oak doors scavenged from a school that his dad got from somewhere. That thing was heavy as a SOB, but it did put out some low end. I had removed the amp section from an Ampeg B115 combo (some cheesy, solid state 120 watt combo they had, probably from the late 70's or early 80's, I don't know,) that was one of my first amps. I don't remember why we took that section out of the amp, since it wasn't meant to do that, but maybe it was curiosity, or the 15" speaker that was in the combo might have blown. Either way, that amp was pretty useless compared to the Peavey Special 130 watt guitar amp he got and liked to crank, so I had to up my game and eventually got the Peavey Databass combo. Friggin' loud $@! guitarists. :P

I don't remember Radio Shack having good size speakers in their stores. They probably did, I just never looked for them there. If I needed speakers, I went to my local mom & pop shop on Davie Blvd. in Fort Lauderdale, MAE. They're still around, bigger, and further west on Davie Blvd. I-95 expansion moved them out of the original location. The two sons run it now. Charlie, and his wife passed away some years ago. He started the business.

I built a 4x12 cabinet from the RS "Guitar" speakers to match my Peavey Deuce (back when National Lumber was still in business)
How did they sound? Well.... "it worked" is all I can say, given that my "tone" at the time consisted of the gain being on 11. They were a good balance for the Eminence 12's in the combo, so it made for a cool 6x12 "3/4 stack"

They also had 12" PA speakers. The magnets were a bit smaller, and they had a dome cover over the back, similar to some of the vintage Jensens.
For all I know, they may have been Eminence, but the guitar speakers had round magnets and not the square magnets that were common.

I looked at the Radio Shack site, and they don't seem to carry speakers anymore. Considering they are just an online thing now, I guess I can see why.

The SS electronics really kicked them hard. I'm even surprised that Radio Shack is even on line.

Yeah, I know. I think them getting into the cell phone business might have effected that, since they got away from their original purpose. Although, you could still get connectivity parts there, which I miss them being around for. You know, RCA to stereo 1/4" adapters, that sort of thing. Now, I'd have to order that online (AMS carries that stuff) and wait a day or two for it to ship, when I could just pop in there and pick it up, which we did.

Getting back to their speakers, I was looking online to find out, and someone was selling a pair of Radio Shack 15" speakers they made in the 70's, and were mentioning something about those possibly being made by either Utah or Pyle. They still make Pyle speakers, by the way.

Utah was a good speaker. I forgot about them until you just mentioned them.

I remember Lafayette was another electronics parts place like Radio Shack.

Didn't Fender use Utah speakers in some of their amps? Maybe Ampeg, too? I recall someone like that did, but I'd have to go digging for that info.

I've heard about Lafayette in my internet travels. I take it they were before my time, or did they survive into the 70's? I don't remember ever seeing one when I was a little kid, at least.

No, I don't think Lafayette Electronics made it through the emergence of the SS's. I do remember there was a Lafayette Electronics store on State Road 7 in Fort Lauderdale close to where I lived for a while.
I honestly don't recall what amps had Utah's from the factory.

Well, come to find out, they actually made it to 1981. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lafayette ... lectronics

There weren't any in St. Pete, but there was in Manassas, where I was born, and lived until I was 6, but I don't remember it, so if I did see that place, it would have been there. I don't remember my parents frequenting any electronics stores, either. Although, they were a part of a CB radio club back in the day, and even had a home receiver unit. That's so 70's. :P

I did find this tidbit about Utah speakers: http://dldebertin.com/speakers/utah.htm
