I heard FM Stereo in the doctors office when I was a kid. FM rock stations took a while. Some FM stations at first, played Rock at certain times of the day, along with other types of music. Then some of those turned into all FM rock stations. There was a local Fort Lauderdale AM stations that had an open format at times of the day, until it went all rock. It was more of a FM sound to it than AM. It was one of the first crossover stations. Then stereo AM came out.

I know FM also played a lot of album cuts, and things that weren't the traditional 3 minute single. Like you could hear the long version of The Doors "Light My Fire." They still did a little bit of free form up into the 80's, playing live tracks and whole album sides. Then in the 90's, everything got really corporate with Clear Channel (in Florida, at least) where they just play a 250 song playlist of the same stuff over and over again.

The FM stations sometimes called themselves, album rock. When Bob Dylan released "Like A Rolling Stone", the AM stations played about three minutes or so, and then just faded out to end it's play. But then The Beatles released "Hey Jude". That was different. "Hey Jude" got it's entire play time. You didn't mess The Beatles. In most cases, there was the single version, and then there was the album cut. It was fun.

I think "Hey Jude" was the first song that they played that went over the 3 minute mark, wasn't it? I suppose after FM came into being, that became irrelevant, though.

They played others over three minutes, just maybe not the entire song. Yes, I believe Hey Jude was the first album style version of a song that was played in it's entirety. And on AM at the time.

I know there was an edited version of "Light My Fire," to where they cut out the middle solo sections. I've even heard that on oldies stations a long time ago.

Iron Butterfly had a 45 record [Single Version] of "In-A-Gadda-Da-Vida". This and as you said, "Light My Fire", were from what I remember the two [Single Version] 45's used back then. I know there were others, but those two stand out for me.

It's nice to have a Bassman 500 that doesn't screwup.

It's a good thing I didn't go for the Bassman 800. It wouldn't have matched up as well with the Ampeg SVT-212AV, as the Bassman 500 does. The Bassman 800 would do well with the Ampeg SVT-410HLF. With it being a 4 ohm cab, 500 RMS that peaks at 1,000 watts. So you would get 800 watts from the Bassman 800 head, through the SVT-410HLF. These Bassman SS heads can work well with the correct cabs.

I don't think I ever found out what the 8 ohms rating for the Bassman 800 is. I'd suspect it's probably 400 or 500 watts, based on the ratings from other amps with that power rating, like Ampeg, etc.

The Bassman 800 is 500 watts @ 8 ohms. I did better with the Bassman 500 @ 4 ohms, to the SVT-212AV being a 4 ohm cab, peaking at 600 Watts. I have a 100 watts to play with. A little headroom.

Either way, 500 watts isn't a slouch in the volume department, especially if you have a good cab to produce the sound with.
