I looked on eBay and they had some priced between $388 to $575, depending on what you want or need, I guess. That was what I happened to find on one page without really looking deep into it.

I'm just glad I don't need, or use those cases anymore. I just have my little Bassman half stack here at home, doing fine. I still do like the looks of full stacks across a stage though. To me it was power, and a full arena sound.

Yeah, I have to agree. There is something about that. I think that's why I've always liked the big speakers, even though the technology is so far advanced now, where smaller bass speakers are concerned, that put out low end. To me, there was something that says "BASS!" with the big speakers. I guess it's also a 60's aesthetic that appeals to me with them, especially the 18" speaker. I'd love to have one of those Vox Foundation 18" cabs, but loaded with a modern driver, since I'd have my doubts about the longevity of an original Goodman's 100 watt speaker that's at least 50 years old. Especially, not with my amp hooked up to it. :P

The big cabs just looked impressive on stage. The audience saw the Mountain of amps, and felt they were getting their money's worth for the ticket.

Yeah, that does add to the whole stage presence thing.

No doubt about it. And a lot of the bands back then, had the power!

Yeah, they kind of had to, considering how primitive PA equipment was. Then again, there's something fun and exciting about a monster stack blasting you. Blue Cheer wouldn't have been the same if they were playing quietly on tiny amps or acoustic guitars, would they? :P

I suppose Hiwatt was more prevalent in the UK than the US, was it? Or was that mostly what the Who used at the time?

It was making itself known. Townsend, Pink Floyd, were two of others they used them on, and off. Sunn was that way also, and there were several players, or bands at one that did use Sunns. Also at one time, there were several bands that switched amps almost on a regular bases. I guess that's why I'm the way I am with changing out gear. Amps weren't a personal thing, that much back then. There were some that stayed with Sunn, pretty much. Mountain used Sunns for Leslie, and Felix. Steve Knight of Mountain, used a Marshall stack, and a pair of Leslie cabs for his B-3, and keyboards.
Sunn sent Leslie West "Sunn Colosseum" heads by mistake. Felix calmed Leslie down long enough for him to try them for his guitar. Leslie tried out one of the most powerful amps at that time, and was WOWED by the raw power it had. The Sunn Colosseum head made a dwarf out of the Marshall 100, or 200 heads available at that time. I heard them both in the audience, and right behind them backstage. They were LOUD even back stage.
Little known fact, Leslie West did a track, or two on the "Who's Next" album.

Yeah, those Sunn Colosseum heads were 300 watts into 2 ohms, which wasn't too shabby, especially for the time period, plus with that impedance, you could hook up four 8 ohm cabs, which would expand your volume even further. Then they had the slave amps to add to the ruckus, as well.

That reminds me, I once came across a Marshall tube slave amp that was around 300 watts, that the shop was selling as a bass head. That must have been rare as rocking horse poop, since it was the only time I've ever heard or seen that, but then again, I've not done some deep internet search about it, either. Have you ever seen those in your travels? I'm not even sure what decade it was from. I suppose it could have been the late 70's or the 80's, maybe earlier. No clue.

Amen to the Sunn's power, and versatility they had. Marshall's were so diverse for what they offered, almost depended on where you were at that time, for what was available. It was hard to keep up with the Marshall gear from the UK, and North America.

If you came across an old Sunn stack and the price was right, and it was in good shape, would you ever pick one up?

I would love to, but I'm totally maxed out. To me, Sunn was the finest of any of the powerful stage amps. And my second was Kustom. These two amps sounded great, and they worked!!!

Yeah, it was good enough for the Ox, and he wasn't some quiet little player. :P
