The Ampeg Portaflex 500's were burning, and or catching on fire. I don't know if mine was going to go bad, because I returned it. I couldn't get a serious sound out of it. I tried everything I could think of to get it to sound right. It just didn't have it. It was also underpowered for a 500 watt amp.

Yeah, I remember reading something that you were suppose to crank the gain up higher, otherwise you'd have some sort of shutdown failure, or whatever the hell that was, but there were others who had no issues at all, so who knows? Knock on wood, but I've never had any failures with my Orange or Fender, or lack of volume for what they are suppose to do.

I've had issues with Ampeg Combos, not having the true watts, as to the rated watts. I gave up on the Ampeg combos. They just weren't was I was looking for in a bass combo amp. Fender, GK, and Markbass are more in line with their watts. There are other combos I haven't dealt with. I won't get into the trashy Marshalls.

Yeah, the Marshalls are long gone, now. I had an Ampeg SVT 3 Pro back in the 90's and a cheesy B115 that was probably from the 70's, when I started playing bass, as far as Ampeg goes. I originally fried the SVT 3 Pro, but that was probably my fault. I used it in a few ways I probably shouldn't have had, and the transformer burned out. That was an expensive mistake. Live and learn. :P

Ampegs can be iffy at best, at times.

True, or they can be amazing, from what I understand. I will say, I've liked the tone I've gotten from them, but then again, I also like the Fenders and Orange amps, too.

Some of the bigger Ampegs I'd have no problem with. The cabs are still decent anyway.

Speaking of which, the band I went to see in concert tonight, the bassist had an SVT 7 Pro going through an Ampeg Classic 4 x 10" cab. I have to say, especially since I was standing in front of him, it was one big wall of bass he had going on. 8)

That's one of the better Ampegs going.

I'd say so. The club had a good PA system in it, too. That's always helpful.

The nice thing about the Ampeg SVT-410HLF, it's a 500 watt cab, that peaks out at 1,000 watts. So the 7 PRO, 1,000 watt head is compatible.

Yeah, it can take and put out some power. He's actually cut down on the cab size, since he use to have an 8 x 10" cab with the Ampeg. He has the cab stacked on top of the road case for it, and the head was in it's own road case, too.

That's a big road case for an SVT-410 HLF cab.

Yeah, I'll bet those aren't cheap, those cases.

I don't know how much those cases would run.
