I can see what you mean. The Super Bassman isn't exactly like some lunchbox sized amp like the Orange is, although you could have it somewhere other than on top of the cab. Sometimes, that can be a pain to deal with, too. You'd need something to put it on.

The Super Bassman is 65 pounds, 24" across, 10" high, and 13" deep. It kinda' sits where it wants to. On top of a solid cab. Sorry, my old school Roadie again. It's the safest place for it to be, and still accessible for getting to at a low, but reasonable height. The Super Bassman at 65 pounds, is 20 pounds heavier than the Bassman 115 Neo it's perched on. OUCH!Image

That amp weighs the same as my Rumble 350 combo. Valves aren't lightweight, that's for sure, but they sound pretty good.

It out weighs a number of cabs, and combos. You're right though, the valve setup does sound pretty good. At least it's lighter than the Ampeg SVT heads.

I think that Fender 400 PS head weighed around 89 or 90 pounds. It was a beast, that's for sure. Plus, to use the full 435 watts, you had to plug in 3 of the cabs. I imagine those weren't light, either. Still, that think must have shook the foundation when cranked. It would have been ridiculous to use a guitar with it, even though it had the channel for it, since most amps were multi purpose back then, anyway.

A lot of the older tube heads were 90 - 100 pounds. The transformers in them were beasts.

Yeah, I suppose they had to be, back then.

Just the Chassis in them was a heavy part of the heads, then everything else added to it. Light weight plywood wasn't used either. Pine was a pretty staple wood for the shell of the head.

Well, they were pretty sturdy, even though they were heavy. A lot of them have survived to this day.

Speaking of heavy woods, a friend of mine that got me into playing bass, built a bass cab that had two 15" Radio Shack speakers (he was on first name basis in that place, because he went there constantly,) and the wood was solid oak that was salvaged from some old doors from a school. The thing weighed a ton, but it could put out some serious low end to it. I imagine if we had better speakers and a better bass amp, that would have been quite a serious cab, albeit not a joy to move.

He wound up cutting the cab in half and using them for stereo speakers, or some PA kind of thing. At that point I had finally got a decent, loud bass amp and we wound up going our separate ways after I had gotten some chops down on the bass and went on to other bands. Sometimes, life works like that. People come and go, then sometimes come back again.

I built one 2X12 cab that was a beast. 5/8", or 3/4" Plywood, with two Jensen 12" Concert Vibrato's, that were Magnet heavy plus. Weighed way to much for what it was. I sold it, and a Traynor Bassmate to a friend to run his keyboard stuff through.

Yeah, I remember you telling me about that rig. They still have it? That would be cool if it's still around. 8)

I seriously doubt it. He left the band, and went to work with Dr. Robert Moog. He became an upper level designer for Moog's Synthesizers. It does help that he could play "Light My Fire", on a Vox Continental Organ. Just kidding.

I wish I could play a Vox Continental Organ (or keys in general,) because those are pretty cool. 8)

The Vox Continental was probably the most widely used keyboard used in the 60's.

Yeah, totally. It's almost the sound of 1965.
