Hello friends.. I am a guitarist and guitar tech that has been asked the crazy question. "dude can you make my standup bass sound better like you did our guitarists sound?" And holy crap the bass world is very different from the guitar world. My friends play in a Rockabilly/Psychobilly band named the Hillside Gamblers. They are posted on youtube and there you can hear what I am talking about. The Standup bass setup my friend has just does not do the job. Its not clean and acoustic sounding as he would like to have it. He likes and is more inclined to the REV Horton Heat's Bassist's sound. I am wondering if this is something that can be attained by changing out his amp head, cabinets, the standup itself, pickup, ect.... Again im a guitarist and am trying to help out a good friend in need of good rig guidance.

Jimbo Wallace is an Ampeg endorsing artist. He uses a King double bass. He has his own signature King bass model with a wicked flame job paint scheme. His signature bass uses Jargar Dolce brand gut strings and the King Doll Head Piezo pickup system. I don't know for sure what brand of strings or pickup he personally uses, but it would be a safe bet that his signature instrument is pretty close. I am pretty sure you won't get that sound with metal strings no matter what pickup or amp you use. If your bassist is using metal strings then I'd try gut strings first if that is really the sound you want and then go from there. Will probably want that work done at a professional shop as the setup on the instrument might also need adjustment if switching from metal to gut strings.

Try to find out what the bass player for Imelda May's band is using...he gets a pretty good sound out of his standup.

My advice is sell the standup. They sound like $@!.

Not always. Jimbo Wallace with Rev. Horton Heat is entertaining. I like his sound, his attitude and energetic playing. Fun to watch and listen to him work.

That is Al Gare. He endorses Danelectro electric basses. When Mr. Gare plays upright, his "Whale-Fiddle" has an old school jazz band sound that is very different from the popping Jimbo Wallace sound in Rev. Horton Heat and it seems the OP is after that Jimbo Wallace/Horton Heat gut sound.

Playing technique will have a bigger effect on upright tone than anything else.

I agree about playing technique having a big impact, but no amount of playing skill can make steel rounds sound like aggressively slapped gut.
