I'm a relatively new bass player, (57 years old) so I'm not looking to be a rock star, I just want to have some fun jamming with my friends. I belong to a group of blues enthusiast and we hold a weekly open jam.
I have a NICE Fender Jazz bass and a crappy little practice amp. I've been looking around for an amp that will give me those old school deep tones, and the Bassman fit's that bill I think. I just ran across an ad for a "Bassman Amp" for $239. The ad reads "Line out plug missing. Otherwise, like new. 110 Watts. Looks like it just came out of the box. Mint condition". My question is did Fender make a 110 Watt Baseman Amp? I can't seem to be able to find one listed if they did. I want to find out something about this model before I call this guy.
I feel like this guy doesn't know what he has, (good for me), or - does know what he has and is trying to make it sound like something it isn't. (bad for me).
Any thought's???

The seller may be reading the power consumption rating off the back where it says "120 Volts AC/110 Watts." That is the power consumption, not power output. That would probably make it roughly a 50 to 60 watt output amp maybe. Quoting the stated power consumption is a common mistake easily made by someone selling something that they don't really know the specs about. If you can find out the Fender combo model and specific TYPE ID (sometimes starts with "PR") then you can find out for sure more about it. The model and type ID will be on the back of the combo's amp chassis and should be easily visible.

For me not having a direct out would mean I personally would not even consider it. That price is a little high anyway. You can buy a brand new Fender Rumble 75 for $249 or less, or you could get an Acoustic 100 watter or even a Kustom 100 watter with an XLR direct output for PA/recording use for that same $249 price. I know I can't use a small combo without a direct output and XLR direct outputs are the best kind of direct output to have.

As far as old school goes, the larger Fender Rumble models are aces. The Rumbles, especially the 150 with the 15 inch speaker and the 350 with 2x10 speakers just amaze me with lush tone but they are relative heavyweights. The Kustom and Acoustic 100 watters can do vintage stuff too mainly because they have 15 inch speakers but they aren't exactly featherlight either.

I figure that since you and I are the same age you aren't looking forward to moving big heavy amps any more than I am. Neither of us are going on world tour or will ever have roadies to move our stacks of cabs tucked into Anvil cases. Of course once you hit the local big-time there's always the new Bassman TV amps which are compact, cool looking and just plain classy when you get ready to step up to something really extra nice.

Nothing is worse than winding up stuck with an amp you don't like using or is really too heavy to move comfortably. Get thee to a major dealer and play a bunch of different amps. See how they sound at half volume. Halfway is about the highest you should have to turn the master gain. If you need to turn it higher, then you need a more powerful amp.

brotherdave,
Thank you for your input. I read with great interest an article you wrote in another amp post. You have provided me with much information and I thank you.

I agree with you, the XLR output is a very important component in any bass amp I'm going to buy. If, in this bassman the output has been removed and their isn't an "issue" involved in putting a new one in then it's just a bargaining tool as far as I am concerned.

I'm going to call this guy today and get as much info as I can, and maybe go look at it if it the conversation feels rite.

Thanks.
