I am going to look at a '68 silverface bassman ten 4x10 that is for sale and the speaker cable is messed on it so i cannot hear if it works. Can i just run a 1/4 cable from the speaker output of the bassman to a cheap little Solid State amp, keep the volume low and turn it just to test and make sure all is working? Or will that cause major problems to the bassman or the cheap amp?

Likely, you'll blow the "cheap little Solid State amp" into the next millennia.

Bring along a stand-alone speaker cab of some type, preferably 8 ohms and plug the Bassman Ten into that. If the speaker in it is suitable for bass guitar then this combination would be safe to audition the amp using a bass. If not, use a conventional six-string guitar.

Incidentally, the Bassman Ten was introduced in 1972.

What Retroverbial said, and be sure to use a speaker cable, not an instrument cable.

I'd not buy it without hearing it. Likely it has some other issues also.

Issues can be used to leverage a more advantageous bargaining position if you know what to look for.
