Well, after years of looking, I finally found an (all original except caps) 54 Bassman tweed.

It's so sweet with my Tele or my 68 LP Custom, I can't describe it.

A question arose as I was researching it. The serial number is #603.

The Fender Bassman guide shows that the FB6 tweed was made from 51-53 (serial numbers 001-0600) and that the FD6-A tweed came out in 1954 (serial numbers 0600-0900 for the year 1954.

However there is no question this is a FB6 from the photos and schematics. I am assuming that in early '54 they still made a few of the FB6 amps before they started making the FD6-A. Is this assumption correct?

Comparing schematics between the two amps may provide some clues......

Bear in mind though that Leo et al often modified circuits right on the production line with little or no documentation of these changes.

Congrats on a great score! Most players prefer the 4 x 10 layout of the later 5F6 Bassman but I (and an ever-growing number of disciples) appreciate what a 15-inch speaker can do for guitar tone.

Thanks, Arjay. You're right about the tone with the 15" Jensen---really smokin and smooth.

The vintage C15N's and P15N's are some of the best speakers Jensen ever made -- not at all like the crummy contemporary import re-issues. I have a '64 Pro Amp that positively oozes vibe when driven into the tone zone.
