I have a 73 SR and I was wondering how it would stack up for bass. I would be using it for recording only, at low volume. I was thinking about plugging it into a 4ohm bass cab. Looking for a fat warm old school blues bass sound. Or switching out one of the 10" for a 8ohm bass speaker and just mikeing that one speaker.

SR Really is not "voiced" for bass. If you like your Super for guitar and want to keep it, try to find a SF Bassman. There are plenty out there that can still be got cheap. And when you aren't using it for bass, it makes a killer 50w guitar amp. The old Bassmans have a Bass and Normal channel.

I was thinking some of the silverface bassman amps had similar circuits. (aa270). Would that not give it a similar voice?

Old wives' tale, oft repeated.

Plenty (and I mean PLENTY) of bassists back in the '60s and '70s let a Fender Dual Showman do their "talking" for them with absolutely fabulous tones to bear witness at countless live concerts and studio recording dates.

The operative issue here is, the SR is optimized to "see" a 2-ohm load at the speaker jack. Likewise, playing a bass -- or bass-heavy keyboard instrument -- through the amp's open-back speaker cabinet is whistling past the graveyard.

A proper bass guitar cab of 4-ohms wired to a SR is a perfectly acceptable ad hoc bass rig......I do something similar with a Twin Reverb and a Bandmaster cab fitted with 12-inch Eminence bass drivers whenever I need a bass amp.

Best of luck, HTH

Arjay

Personally, a super has always been one of my favorite amps to play bass through. It does depend on the music and style, but if you use your ears, and a little common sense it will serve you well for recording, small rehearsal, house type stuff. The keyboard player for the band I work with uses one for piano and accordion both of which can match a bass for low end. The amp does fine, just listen to the speakers for where their limits are at. Its a fender after all, and that means, it's not fragile.

I wouldn't mess up a good guitar amp running a bass through it. My opinion, others may say ok, no problem. Sell it and get a bass amp.

This right here^^. If that's the case they wouldn't make bass amps.

LOL! I never understood that. It is a free world, do what you like. I just think it's crazy to play bass thru a guitar amp. The speakers aren't set up for the low end, blah, blah, blah...you know.

If you do as you plan to do and run the amp through a bass cabinet I doubt very much that it would damage the amp as the biggest risk in such a situation would be to the speakers but at low volume that shouldn't even be an issue.Over the years I've often used a guitar amp for bass in a pinch. As long as you don't subject the speakers to more volume and vibration than they can take everything should be fine. With using the bass cab as long as the Ohms match it should be fine too.

What do you mean in a pinch? Live situation? Band practice? If it's live wouldn't you be going thru the board? the speaker would be pointless anyway since you're going thru the board. If band practice, how can you hear over the drums and the guitarist playing if the volume on the bass is low? Or the question should be, "if you're a bass player, how do you not have your speaker cab when you're going to practice/play live?" I don't get it. Since I was a young kid playing bass, I always had a bass amp - an el cheapo Peave Basic 50, turn up to 10 playing with my 1st band, sitting on 2 milk crates so the drummer, and I can hear the bass.
