A discussion got started on another thread that was off topic so I'm starting a thread here.

About a month ago I bought a GK 800 RB off a homeless dude for $40 and am getting ready to see If I can get it to work. I am learning to read schematics, learning about electronic components and soldering.

Anyway there has been a debate on the "What is your Dream bass?" thread about GK Amps that I'm trying to move down here.

Anyway about tone etc. I know that Apatite for Destruction by Guns n' Roses was recorded with one I always dug the tone on the intro to "Sweet Child of Mine". Dave Ellifson from Megadeth used one on Peace Sells but Who's Buying (MTV News still uses the Bass Riff from Peace Sells on their news briefs). Flea used one on Mothers Milk. I am only now hearing anything bad about them.

Anyway my heavy metal days are behind me so I'm thinking about pairing it up with a Tone Tubby 2x10 and a Hard Truckers 2x15 to give it more of a Hippie spin and pairing it with a Fender Steve Bailey Jazz Bass.

Peace Out,
Rev J

I think I'm to blame for the whole debate, Duff uses GK exclusively, I think. I didn't mention mine was a Backline 210, with a 2x10 cabinet added on. Sad to say, I had nothing but troubles. I happened on a steal of a deal on a Fender Rumble 60 and quit using the Gk altogether, I use a Sansamp Bassdriver which has a direct out so I went to the PA when i played. After looking at the GK just sitting there, I couldn't take it anymore and traded it in.

For all of you that have GK amps and are happy with them, I' glad for you. My experience was just bad.

That's not the model, I don't think...were they out in the mid 90s? 2 guys had the same model head and were having fuse problems on 2 dif't gigs. Rev, do you ever see BrotherDave's comment on GK? He recommends buying the top of the line GK - I'm paraphrasing a bit here. I don't know much what model is what for GK. Sorry man.

To the best of my knowledge the Backline series were GK's El Cheapo line. The top of the line for GK seems to change every 5 years or so. The 800RB was the top of the line in the mid 90's. I remember that is what Flea played although he has one of the bigger ones now.

The funny thing is that since I bought it off the street I don't know the vintage so to speak. I got the Schematics on line but there are 3 sets in the packet and 2 of them say new version. The dates on the schematics say 1982, 1991, and 1992 respectively. But I am getting a handle on reading schematics fairly quickly.

After I get that fixed (or as I get it fixed) I'm going to save up for cabs. Here's what I'm looking at:

http://www.hardtruckers.com/HT215B.html
http://abrown.com/pro/cabstore.html

I think this core should be the center of the Jazz/Funk/Afro/Hippie/Shred thing I want to do.

Peace Out,
Rev J

I have no doubt that the top of the line models are good. Considering that mine was chinese, I don't wonder too much why I had trouble with it.

That being said, both of my amps now are chinese, go figure, I'm not positive if the Kustom is chinese, but so far so good. The little Fender has been drug all over, never abused and there have been no problems.

The only stores worth mentioning around here are 2 GC's and three locals that really have no high end lines. The GC's don't have much in the way of GK, good stuff is Ampeg, Markbass and Fender as far as good amps, lots of low end stuff.

Good luck on your project Rev, hope it works out for you, I have to laugh when I think of this homeless guy walking down the street carrying an amp.

Yeah it was funny since When I walked up to him he was using it to prop up his sleeping bag like a tent stake. I asked him how much He said how much can you give me I said $40. He said sold. I also was such an $@!&#*% and feeling kind of guilty and told him I was screwing him. Ha Ha on me.

Peace Out,
Rev J

I love my GK! Sounds freaking awesome, no issues. I can get ANY sound out of my setup, and it will rattle your bones!
