Greetings everyone, I've been trying to find two replacement speakers for a bass amp, and am having absolutely no luck finding any with the specs I need:

    10"
    4 ohm
gets down to around 30hz ideally
100w -- they're for a 4 speaker cabinet, and I'd like to be able to keep the two other 100w speakers that are in there. sigh.

I'm trying to get these as an amazing present for my boyfriend, but all my searching and trolling has so far been to no avail. Any suggestions?
Thanks!
Jenn

If there are any numbers stamped on the existing speakers or a label affixed to them with numbers, those numbers may reveal the brand and possibly the type of speakers they are. Thus armed with that data, it may be possible to acquire exact matches to replace the damaged pair.

Let us know, HTH

they are proprietary from a Hartke 4200; I was hoping to replace the busted pair with something non-aluminum, but may be dreaming in vain.
Thanks for your suggestions!

Yup. I guess I might just have to buy replacements from hartke, but it would be nice to get something with a different cone material.

You might try Ebay for some OEM-style drivers. They may be cheaper there than buying direct from Hartke.

Best of luck, HTH

If two of them went bad, I wouldn't buy any more like those. Repeating the same action expecting a different outcome is never a good thing to do.

I'd replace with something more durable with higher power capacity and I also would probably seriously consider replacing all four simultaneously. In this care you could replace two now for the birthday and two later for a holiday gift in about 2 months. The specs don't have to be a precise match in all regards but the 4 Ohm impedance is the important thing to match.

I would suggest the Eminence LEGEND model which is available in a 10 inch 4 ohm version.
Legend specs are:
10" Specialized Bass Guitar Speaker
Available in 4 or 8 Ohms
200 Watts RMS
40Hz-2.0kHz
High 6.2mm Xmax
Street price is approximately $75 each

For $300 you could replace all four and double the power capacity of the cabinet to 800 watts. If two have gone bad, it may not be long until the other two go, or they could limp along for a while. You didn't say exactly what is wrong with the two bad ones, but the cones on aluminum cone speakers do tend to separate prematurely. So sooner or later he'll need two more. So long as his amp is 300 to 700 watts it could push 4 LEGENDS fine and probably never blow a single speaker in that cab.

Regarding the frequency response, lots of 10 inch speakers designed for bass cabs spec out at 50 to 60HZ on the low end, but the cabinet itself makes a huge difference to the frequency response and tonal coloration. Besides players adjust the EQ settings (tone controls) on the amp to boost or cut the low end anyway.

I'd seriously consider buying 4 Legends and selling off all four of the aluminum cone speakers on eBay, even the non-working ones. Speaker repair shops like Speaker Doctor in Charlotte, NC can repair the separations on the aluminum cones so maybe you can unload even the non-working ones. You can pack the old speakers in the cartons the new speakers came in for shipping to the eBay auction buyers. I'd post four separate eBay auctions, two for the ones that work and two for the ones that need repair.

While they do have a unique voice, aluminum cone speakers are high maintenance. I won't use them because of that.

I don't know what your time limitations are until his birthday, but if you plan to order online, visit my page here: http://brotherdave.com/add_parts.htm Scroll down to the last category which is "BASS CAB & COMBO REPLACEMENT SPEAKERS" to find dealers that carry Eminence Legend bass guitar speakers.

Seconding Brotherdave's suggestion for the 'Eminence' speakers... that's what comes standard in the Fender Bassman 250-210 series and they just don't go bad. I have been using this style forever and they are bulletproof and rock solid.

Use the chart in the link below below to find the configuration that you are after...
