Hi, I recently bought an M-80 bass amp from a friend of mine for $40, when I got it the volume knob kinda crackeld when turned & it was really touchy. It doesn't crackel anymore but the volume just isn't their, I can crank it and it about as loud as a pocket amp. My question is, is this something I can fix myself, replace some parts. Or should I take it in to get fixed. I'd like to keep the total price down to a minimum.

Any and all help is appreciated

I suggest you take it out for repair. I know it's possible for you to fix it, but the quality of the volume may not be good. I mean because of the low priced parts you'd be using to replace the defective ones.

Anyway it's up to you. Nobody wants to spend much on anything now, lol.

Good luck!

I have an M80 Combo I have owned since 92 and IMO it is worth the cost of repairing it. They are fantastic amps! I still use mine in sessions and on stage. I will never part with that monster!

If you have spray contact cleaner use it on the pot. Next check the solder connection of the pot to the circuit board. (However given that amp's age, any soldering defect probably would have shown up long before now.) If you don't find the problem reassemble and take to a tech. Without the right tools and test gear and training and experience then anything beyond that is out of the question.

These are decent little amps and I definitely would get it fixed unless it was something really expensive like a transformer.

You know brotherdave, i love mine so much I would gladly replace the transformer if I had to. I did alot of touring and session work back in my younger days with this one and have some history with it! Mine has the mojo I could never live without

Would not blame you, but lots of people would move on.

I had one, I can't say the same as you can. And by the way other bass players feel, I'm not alone. Mine was ok up to about 2 years, then it died. I keep all my equipment in pristine condition. The M80 certainly wasn't an amp I'd ever recommend. For beginners, it's a decent amp. For gigging musician, look elsewhere. Obviously, this is just my opinion...like an a hole, every body has one ;)

Sometimes, even bad ones get built right and has what the other mass produced brothers don't have right :) that mojo certainly is important, if your have it that is a rarity in this series...mine certainly didn't.

I love my M80. I still struggle to see why it was a flop.

(and I've just realised the OP was talking about an M-80 Bass Amp...)

I know this is an old thread thats been bumped but.

I have the M80 bass. Bought it second hand when I was in high school about 13YO. Still have it, much better than my recently acquired TE.

Got a new set of Jack sockets not long ago and it's about to go into the daughters bedroom for her to use. Never faltered bar the plastic jacks going brittle.

even my mate who I bought the TE off commented on how much extra my M80 had (Before his life as a bassist he was the guitarist in the same band as I for 8 years of weekly playing so knows it well) . Never heard a bad word said about it from anyone.

BTW it still has the same blob of blu-tack the previous owner tucked in a corner for holding picks. Mrs reckons I'm feared to remove it in case it's keeping the thing going.
