Fender should SERIOUSLY think about this because apparently NOBODY else is.

I got this idea when I saw that the manual with my new Tech 21 Bass Driver Deluxe said it was best to plug it into the POWER AMP IN jack on my stack. I can do that sure...and bypass the entire preamp section....which is a total waste of weight I have to move around and the money I spent on the preamp section!

With so many people using Sansamps, Basspods, Boss Bass Floor Units and WHATEVER else...how about this?

A 500 watt or so Class D power switching amp in a lightweight poplar cab or even a metal cab, WITH NO PREAMP AT ALL. Just a DIRECT XLR in which goes directly to a power switching class D power amp and a pass-through XLR out to feed the PA.

The volume control on your instrument and on your Sansamp or Pod are the ONLY volume controls. OK you can put a master volume on it if you want and add $10. I actually PREFER that the amp is always WIDE OPEN.

The cab holds one Eminence NEO 12 or NEO 15 PLUS one NEO 10 and one Fostex or similar horn. Stand alone it puts out 250 watts with a provision to patch out to a second 8 ohm cab for about 500 watts with a 4 ohm total load.

No headphone out, no aux in. No bells, no whistles, no lights, no compression, no limiting, no vintage speaker emulation...nothing but a class D switching power amp in a cab with decent speakers.

It weighs about 50 pounds tops. Less is better. The amp section is flat...just a power amp. This should cost $899 retail. I really think this is doable. And I think that in 2011 and beyond there is a market for it. The TV amps are cool looking sure...but what I need is one LIGHT but very LOUD amp to plug my SansAmp into that I can use at rehearsals and at gigs. I get the tone I want from my Tech 21 NYC Bass Driver, I just want it amplified.

So that is my idea for the perfect bass amp for 2011 and beyond.

I think what you describe is becoming the trend. More and more bass players
are going with a preamp or pedal for the tone and a linear amp for the power.

Fender supports that approach with their MB 1200 Power Amp.

The only control is a single volume control. Of course, they would like you to
use it with their TBP-1 Tube Bass Preamp. But, as you noted, Tech 21 has
some popular pedals. I've only heard raves for their VT pedal.

Given that musicians are looking for simple, clean, linear, power amps and
that manufacturers really have this down to a science now with class D amps,
there are going to be a lot of low cost, high power options available.

It's a good time to be a bass player.

Yes, But a small light combo is what I want. Maybe they are going in that direction. I seriously thought about building one.

Interesting idea. Isn't this a trend that is kinda repeating itself just in a smaller more powerful package? I like the Class-D amp thing that is happening right now. I just remember back in the 80's a lot of bass players used a separate preamp power amp set up. Obviously they were a lot bigger and weigh considerably more then those of today. I think the idea has considerable merit though especially with the technology of today.

Hey - Dave

Sounds like a plan. Maybe we should petition Mike 'E' to put in a good word for those of us who need tons of stage presence but hate lugging extra equipment around.

Just comes down to marketing and the customer demand for such goodies.

[ By the way, Dave - did y'all get my email last week ? ]
