Hi folks,
I just acquired a couple Bassman 2-15 cabs, unloaded, and have 2 questions:
1) Where would I ask about serial #s to date the cabs, and
2) How do I find out what is best to use for speakers for these boxes?

I had a Sunn 300T 2 years ago, which I had to sell (work was very bad, it was Christmas), and these cabs look a bit similar to the stock cab that came with that rig. That cab was awesome sounding (as was the amp!). It had two stamped-steel frame speakers in it, I guess they must have been stock Fenders.

Anyway I'm curious how to handle these. Thanks for reading!

I have a 68 Bassman 2-15 cab and the speakers just said Fender.I found out later that the speakers even though they say Fender could have been made by any number of companies and that there was a number on the speaker giving the manufactures code.I haven't removed the back since as when I bought it it only had 4 screws holding in place and I have since replaced all the 20 or so screws so it's too much of a hastle to take it off again.JBLs were optional at the time as most equipped with them had the JBL logo on the cab fronts so JBLs would be an excellent choice,Fender also used Oxfords quite a bit.I have a warm spot for Celestion speakers but they tend to be pricey.Jensens would be a good choice and more people are suggesting Eminence these days. I think all in all JBLs would give you the best response and reliability.

Hi; guitslinger is right on about the JBL's. Jensen are good bass speakers, but JBL has been an excellent speaker for a Bassman cab. I used Jensen, because I couldn't afford JBL years ago.

Hi Count Bassie, unfortunately I'm not familiar with JBL 15" speaker models but I imagine that any with the K prefix should be quite good as the !2" K -120 is a fabulous speaker.I think that as long as the wattage and Ohm rating match the amp any JBL would do the trick,I have yet to hear of a poor JBL.

You know that's an interesting answer. I have a couple PA cabs with JBLs in 'em... heh-heh-heh... might actually give this a whirl... thanks for the idea!

Hi Count B,Me again,I've been doing some poking around and apparently Weber makes a couple of suitable speakers based on JBL designs, the Neo Mag 15 for $180 and the California 15 for $115.I've heard a lot of good things about Webers and they may be worth checking into.

I appreciate that! I'll go look into 'em, good of you to look into that, mang. Meanwhile I'm going to try those JBLs I have here, I'll post what happens... hopefully they'll survive!

Thanks for your time and work there, bro.

I've run into a couple prospects for speakers, and I get to try them out before I buy 'em, which is great!

The dude selling the speakers is coming down from NH to RI on a weekday and we'll have a run at it. He's got a pair of Gauss 5840s and a pair of JBL K140s. I've got two of these Bassman cabs, so one's getting loaded with the JBLs, and the other with the Gauss 5840s. I'll use the same head (A.M.P. BH-420 and/or a Trace-Elliot 250SMX) with both cabs, and we'll A/B them until we hash it out, and I decide which to throw down for. He's a sound tech, and he's into the trial/experiment thing as much as I am. This'll be fun. :D

I'll post findings...

I had the Sunn 300T rig for a while, which cab is close dimensionally to this old box. It was a great sound, carried well in the band and was an easy haul-around for its size. I'm also having fun with this, and recycling old gear. My kids are Green-minded, and I've agreed to bind myself to the ethic for their fun. I'm a dad... 8)

If it doesn't work out, I'll sell it to another geezer and go get a Mesa 215 (or maybe that SWR Goliath-II I keeping wishing I had. That's a great cab).

Anyway I'm decided on the JBLs. Saving up...

Hi, I have the same 215 cabinet, thuogh I still got the orginal speaker which are still good I have switched the speakers for more efficient ones:

Celestion BN15-300 s orange series.
http://professional.celestion.com/bass/pdf/BN15-300S4.pdf

The speakers sounds very agressive and full compared to the old situation with the orginal ones. The orginal wattage was 150 watts I think, now it's a 600 watt cab.

I've asked around poeple who know how to make cabs and found out that there are a few parameters linked to the dimensions of a CAB construction, so these speakers where efficient enough for this 215 CAB.

The vintage character is gone but in combination with the silverface head it still is an impressive sound.

I do Ska and Reggae type of music so there is very much low end involved!
