Hey, new to the forum. Looking for some help about my buddy's amp.

My buddy picked up a used Bassman 300 pro for $500 Canadian. Mint condition exterior wise.. But there is an issue with the head. He knew this when he bought it but it was such a good deal he thought he would buy it anyways. There is an airy sort of sound coming through the speakers. It sounds crackly at times. It also sounds distorted when the amp is set clean. The guy who originally had it said he had the tubes checked and he said he thought it was a bad solder.. Just looking for some help/opinions before my buddy brings it in to get looked at.

Not sure what is happening, but I would suspect it is the tubes. I had to have my full set replaced.

The head is absolutely amazing. I've never played a better head. I keep trying the SVT heads from Ampeg, but they don't sound as good and are not as flexible. The compressor is also very good.

The only drawback is the weight!

My advice would be to try a really good and trusted technician to work on the tubes.

Best of luck with it.

Thanks for the reply. We don't really know of any good amp techs. There is a local music store who carries mostly all low end gear. Then about 45 minutes away there is a Long & Mcquade. I'm pretty sure the local shop would rip him off when it comes to buying new tubes. I asked them how much a Fender HSC would cost me and there price was $300 Canadian.. I'm not sure if Long & Mcquade would be too much better. But atleast we have a good idea what could be wrong with it.

I have one brand new and I have not gigged with it yet. I wil buy a spare tube set soon as a back-up. I found this site for tubes:
tubedepot.com
I asked for a set price and they seem to have a great selection and they also sell the Fender Bassman 300 which might mean that they could refer you to service techs in your area....................
