What is the point of bass amps, doesn't a normal amp work just as well?

No. Guitar amps are not, as a general rule, as equally suitable for bass as a bass amp. This is especially true of guitar combo amps.

Bass amps need far more POWER, special speakers (larger power capacity, larger voice coils, heavier duty cones and surrounds), special preamp voicing, a different EQ setup, built in compression/limiting, sealed or ported bass relex cab designs instead of an open back, a good horn and it is nice to have an XLR direct out to feed the PA or recording console. None of these things are present on any of today's guitar amps so far as I know. They are present on some high end keyboard amps, but not guitar amps.

However some guitar heads can be used for bass so long as they are paired with a bass speaker cab. The old Fender Showman comes to mind as a great bass head in it's day but it primarily was the top of the line Fender guitar head. The reverse is also true as some bass amps, especially Fender tube bass amps, make fabulous guitar amps.

Modern features on most of today's bass amps are considered must haves by most bassists. Furthermore playing a bass through a guitar combo amp can actually damage or even blow the speaker completely burning up the voice coil so that not even reconing will fix it..
