435 watts tube. Imagine that with one of those cabs hooked up to each channels. Perfect for those intimate coffee house gigs so you can disembowel people. Heh.

I know what you mean. I've foolishly got rid of a lot of gear by dumb impulses or bordom over the years. One instance was a Japanese re-issue of a P-Bass that Fender put out in the early to mid 90's. It was one of the nicest basses I ever owned. It was white with the gold pickguard and maple fretboard. The action on it was sweet. So was the tone. I liked it even better than the 1971 American Jazz Bass I had before that one. The funny thing is that these instruments weren't worth anything back then. Now they want over $1000 for them. Who knows what the Japanese ones go for?

Well I picked up a used 51 butterscotch CIJ p-bass few months ago on Craigslist for 500.00 with an skb case, an extra set of flatwounds, and a cord. Its in excellent shape, sounds great and gets lots of attention from other players.

That sounds like a pretty good deal. From my experience, I think the Japanese Fenders were some of the best ones made; especially the ones made during the 80's. Of course, that's a matter of opinion. I've just never have seemed to come one that didn't have any serious issues. Then again, results may vary.

It's hard to imagine any company trying to produce an amp like the 400 PS today. Six 6550s and a transformer phase inverter are beyond the scope of what I've seen offered the bass players lately. Mesa probably comes the closest, right? I'm an old guitar playing amp tech that has worked on a few of the venerable Ampeg Bass amps, but have never had the pleasure of seeing a 400 PS. Has anyone tried one through some newer cabs? And the 300 PS has got to be a great amp. Art

I started on a Bassman 50 circ. 1975.For 50 watts it rattled some garage doors. I'm getting the urge to go back to tubes. I'm thinking of trading in the Mesa for a tube amp maybe a 300 Pro or SVT. Don't know which yet. A fliptop might fill the bill too.

Yeah Walk, those Fender 50watt amps could move some air, nice big output trannies. Our bass player used a V-4,I think that was the model, in a blues band for years. It did a great job in clubs, halls, and recording. The only times we mic'd it was for outdoor venues. Hard to beat those old Ampeg amps for power and tone. But do those 300 PS amps ever surface on the selling boards? If I played bass , I'd try one of those, they seem like a great gigging amp. Just a thought from an old guitar picker. Art
