I play a Bassman 300 Pro at live gigs. I love the tone of it through my 215 cabinet. However, it huge and difficult go get around.

I'm thinking of trying a '59 Bassman to use for gigs.

Does anyone use the '59 Bassman amp?

Any comments on tone?
Does it have enough volume for a medium size venue?
Do the speakers break up at higher volumes?

I think the '59 Bassman is a great amp for harp and a good guitar amp too. It probably is anemic for gigging, but you could record with it. This amp has an open back so it isn't really boomy. It only has about 45 watts on it's best day. Won't cut it in my band but if you are in an acoustic outfit it might work ok. It is surprisingly light for a tube amp with 4 speakers though.

I believe that the BASSMAN TV FIFTEEN might be a better choice of a combo. It looks vintage but has 350 watts. This is a single tube preamp stage into a class D 350 watt solid state amp switching power supply power amp set up. If you like the sound of a 15 inch speaker you would probably like the sound it of it. Same amp is available with two ten inch speakers. It weights about 60 pounds and the street price in the USA brand new is 1000 USD. That is about 400 dollars under the less powerful '59 RI.

I'd try them both. But I wouldn't try gigging with a 59 Bassman with my band.

JimBR: I saw one response to your inquiry suggesting that your bassman was not powerful enough for gigs. I guess it depends. I played my 59 for five years in a moderate sized club. For bigger venues, we just miked the amps into the PA system which is much better than having all that power behind you. In the old days, before modern PA sound systems you had to have all the volume back there. Take it from me and the Who surviving members, push the sound out in front and keep it moderate behind you. Your ears will pay a heavy price in later years. It was fun though!

Cheers
Pat
