awesome dude, I just traded a blues deluxe for one of these! The only problem I forsee is the weight, 101 lbs. I say go for it, but be prepared to shell out some bucks for tubes. The coolest feature is the EQ, you'll be able to dail in anything.

:D Thanx for the reply BOBROX, I wish it was back in May tho... I missed out on that amp. I cannot remember what it sold for either. Tho I'll def. keep an eye out for another. I 'grew up' on Fender Bassman all tube amps, I had a 100w for years thru the early 80's & til' the mid 90's. It was stolen -along with My '77 maple board Precision :x which I bought brand new in '78 with money from my earlier paper round & then from the gigs I had, which was then my 1st band.

As far as all tube amps - now I've only a Ampeg SVTII ('92' non-'pro' model) & a Traynor YBA-200 & I think after finding a Mesa Walkabout Scout 12" combo, & how awesome that is, the Traynor is gonna have to go. :(

The RW Precision I've got, with Fender tapewounds on- sounds superb into the Walkabout & the SVTII
DAMN hard to beat - In my view- the Precision 'split' pick up! My Reggie Hamilton Sig. Jazz has the P/J pup set up - so by rolling the pup blend to the P pup- that too is essentially another Precision. I've got that loaded with T.I. flats & that too is superb!
Thanx again for the info re the STUDIO amp. With the 6 x 6L6 power tubes it should kick some serious butt methinks. I'd love to find another.......

I ended up getting a STUDIO BASS amp in June 2012.

Image

It'd been converted into a head only with a BASSMAN headcase.
Superb bass amp!! :D Sounds GREAT into my Berg NV412 & into 2 single 12"s I can more easily get power tube Overdrive without blasting volume... we do play pretty loud tho..
&, yes, the EQ (active) IS great, I find I usually use this to add/subtract a problem area, or an area of freqs I'm focussing on, usually I'm just using the PASSIVE BASSMAN EQ.

Thanks for the 'push' to keep an eye out for these

There's this page: http://ampwares.com/amplifiers/fender-studio-bass/

Not a lot of info, but I think it's a pretty cool site.

You're right. Not a LOTTA info on 'em. I got the Schematics, original manual & all NOS tubes in mine when I got it, so IT CRANKS.
Interesting to read one person had swapped the transformers for bigger beefier ones- saying they were beter for bass etc.. :!: I guess that's true, but I find NO LACK of bass with this amp. It'll easily over load the stock EV speaker that comes with it in its orig. combo format-even tho these are good strong 15"s
I've a got a couple of 1x15"s one EV TL606(EV 400w driver- same as Mesa PH115) & an Ampeg PF115HE- which doesn't handle anywhere near the 400w it's rated for-specs
Also- the Studio bass amp ir rated for 8 ohms, but, like most Fender Bassmans/tube amps of its time, it'll happily run at 4 ohms (or 16) all day without any probs.
I'm using it at 4 mostly, 8 when I just use the 1 x 15" :D

Speaking of transformers and Ampeg, I had an Ampeg SVT 3 Pro many moons ago that had it's transformer melt down on me. There's nothing more thrilling than the stink of your amp dying in the middle of a rehearsal (suppose it could be worse if it was on stage) and you're piss broke at the time. Luckily, it was at a fully equipped rehearsal place and they had an old Peavey Mark IV that I could use. Oddly enough, it seemed to have more balls than the Ampeg ever did. That was the problem I always had with that thing before it died. Good tone, yes, but no "oomph." The funny thing about that was I foolishly traded in a Fender BXR 300 combo for it, thinking it would be cool to have an Ampeg stack. Bad move on my part.

I've noticed one thing about the Fenders, they do seem to put out some bass and have the tone to go with it. I never had an opportunity to play through a tube version, though.

From what I understand, you can get away with running at lower ohms with certain tube amps. The wizened amp dudes around here know more about that stuff in detail. I just know it's a no-no with solid state.

While the Fender tube heads were pretty good bass amps, the Fender cabs were somewhat less capable than some other makes. I think it was the cab porting and all that insulation that made them sound less than idea.
