although i don't have an amp right now i have been using a little peavey with one twelve speaker and it's been ok for rehearsal but in order to get more volumn we mic'd it through the pa on monday . so , tens , twelves , fifteens , eighteens , i've used them all and it seems like the six tens or eight ten cabs sound the brightest obviously i'm thinking about it and am leaning again towards the bigger speakers , bros , some feedback on this whether its from experience or some information that you came across another way .

6 and 8 10"s sound great and full, especially live. Although our bassists uses a Hartke 1-15". With that aluminum cone, that thing makes some noise. We olny mic to record.

Depends what you are after my Ttraynor cab has 2 * 15's
With only 50 watts it will knock out windows, and you can really feel it whack your body.

With the 600 watts in that TB-600C Combo you could probably violate some civil defense ordinances.

The lower frequencies really need to move some large masses of air for the sound to form properly

My Bassman 210/250 has a lot of "pop" -- very modern sound -- you can project a very clear bass line with it. However, it doesn't really move air and push bodies like a 15" would.

Back when I had a much bigger rig, I used a 4 X 10 and a separate 1 X 15" to get both effects. If I were playing out now, I'd probably augment the Bassman with a 15" as well. I like the old school heavy bass American sound and that does require the bigger speakers.

Moving air means everything. The size of the cabinet and the amount of speakers and their quality makes all the difference in the world. The size of the speaker will vary in bandwidth and speed. Though multiples of 10's will push just as much air as larger speakers, but with a quicker response. Again the cabinet design is a crucial factor with all that has been mentioned.

Size matters. I use 5" PJB speakers. Those things will move air like nothing else.

Generally speaking 10's are quick responding but only really sound good with at least 4 working together.

12's are amazing, they can handle anything. Check out EBS 2x12 cabs for proof.

15's are nice for subwoofer functions. But can be used fullrange.

18's are only for subwoofer fuctions and work great bi-amp. No one exept stoned reggae players use them standalone.

Of course everything really depends on design of the cabinet and the speakers used so use your own ears.

Put a 1x15 on the bottom and a 2x10 or 4x10 on top. Presto!

I've GOT to have at least one 15 at a gig. Something like a 2x10 combo on top of a 1x15 cab would work too. I use an amp rack and 2 cabs though.

If you have a truck or van then you can haul the 8x10 or 6x10. But if you are like me and don't always have access to an adequate vehicle for it then stacking 2 cabs that will fit in a your car is a very viable and effective option.

Also often I get home late after everyone else at home is asleep and I don't have help to unload. There is no way I could get a 6x10 up the front steps by myself. So stacking smaller cabs comes in handy there too.

You can start by buying one cab or the other and get by with one until you can purchase the second.

I hate moving big gear because I'm getting older. So I take a little combo to rehearsals and leave the big guns at home.

I have 2x10 and 1x15 Hartke XL series. Enough for me, I will double it on gigs 2 2x10 and 2 1x15. To push air for the bass thump, 4x10 actually works better than 1x15. That's why Ampeg's top line is their 8x10s :D

Like BrotherDave says, I too am getting older and nobody to help by the time I get home, it's easier to break up stacks than to bring 6x10 or 8x10 into the house @ 3am - I have a detached garage too

Personally I don't like anything smaller than a 10". My stack is a 4x10 top with 2" adjustable tweeter and a 1x15 ported bottom. For small space practice I use a Fender Frontman 15B that I believe has an 8" speaker. And generally messing around and major practice I enjoy a Laney BC50 which has a 12" Sheffield bass speaker. But I still like my stack better than the other two due to the sound that they produce together, mixing both higher and lower frequencies in a ratio I like.

If you want to try something to help your amp produce more of a sound you want, get a BBE sonic maximizer. It brought out sounds that my stack wouldn't normally produce.

When in doubt go with at least a 50watt amp that has either a 2x10 or 1x15 combo.

I just love 12" speakers, they are mellow, can handle high and low frequencies, and sound amazing in partnership with my Jazz Bass! This is my first post here, so I'll take the oppertunity just say hi from rainy England (as per usual). I look forward to becoming part of the community :D
