Today I noticed that my Rumble 500c has developed the dreaded scratchy pot problem.

Only the Master volume is affected, and only when running a signal through the the amp while adjusting the volume. Have tried turning the knob several times before turning the amp on to no avail.

It's also my understanding that since the pot is sealed, the problem can not be solved with contact cleaner and the like.

Is there anything to be done short of replacing the pot altogether?

I don't know, other than using contact cleaner for that issue. That's the only thing I've heard about for trying to fix that, other than actual replacement. Maybe someone else knows something else? I suppose, if you have some contact cleaner on hand, it might not hurt it to try.

Thanks for weighing in.

The reports I’ve heard indicate that contact cleaner does not work with these pots. Besides, since this problem appears only when a signal is fed through, it suggests that the trouble is elsewhere. In the case of dirty contacts, I would expect to hear the noise whenever the pot was turned.

Oh, OK. Could it be a short somewhere?

I suspect that the pot itself may be bad. I've heard of other Rumbles, particularily early ones, who have had this problem as well. It may be that it needs to be swapped out entirely - but obviously that would be a last resort. I was hoping there were less drastic fixes, but I realize I may have to bite the bullet and get a new pot.

Hi Jakob! You can clean the pots from the rear. So you'd have to pull the amp out of your combo to do that. It might be best to go ahead and let an electronics technician check it out. Or you could trade up to a Stage 800! New everything! :)

I don’t really feel competent to open things up myself, but I’ve taken it in to the place I bought it today, and they’re going to have a look. Even though the 5-year warranty Fender used to have doesn’t apply, my local laws still give me 5 years in which to complain about a defective product, so there’s a good chance they will fix it for me free of charge.

I do feel tempted by the Stage 800, but I can’t justify the expense at the moment. Besides, if I did get one I would have to get a matching 210 as well!

Hopefully, you won't have too much issue with it getting fixed, or looked at.

I’ll report back when I get it back from the shop, which should be sometime after Easter.

JakobT never did report back here, but he did on the Fender Rumble Club.
"Just before Easter, my Rumble 500c developed a scratchy volume pot, so I took it back to the store in the hope of getting it fixed. After inspecting it, they sent it on to Fender. I had imagined that they would replace the bad pot, but I received word today that they’re replacing the amp altogether - a new one has been ordered, and should be with me shortly. Not bad, considering I got the amp three and a half years ago."

With a brand new Rumble 500 combo! Fender's customer service is unequaled. There are several other testimonials of Rumble owners getting brand new amps. Not many as very few Rumbles ever need repairs.
