Yeah, Kustom amps were very cool. You still can find them around, too. I guess they were built very well, then. 8)

Kustoms were built like Brick Shitz Houses! Their design was amazing also.

Yeah, they certainly were unique, and were pretty tough, it seems. I know they weren't cheap, either. I've seen the old price listings for them from the vintage Kustom site. For one of those huge stacks with the twin cabs, it was something listed over $1300. That's a hell of a lot of money for the late 60's, I'm sure.

A VW Beetle in 1969-1970 cost about $1,800. to $1,900. new. The $1,300. could have been MSRP. and not street price available from a local dealer.

Here's the price list, which I'm sure is MSRP, from 1971: http://www.vintagekustom.com/frame.html Actually, the 500 bass system with 6 x 15" JB Lansing D-140F speakers goes for $2155, according to that. That's some serious cash, list or not, but that must have been one hell of a bass system, though.

Yeah, that had to be MSRP. That was one hell of a system. Kustom didn't do anything in a cheap way. Good quality.

I imagine having 6 JB Lansing speakers was also something, as well. I wouldn't mind that hooked up to the Ampeg to shake things up a bit. 8)

Something about the Kustom cabs that was a great sound. JBL's, Jensens and Altec's tones were right there.

I think they used both, with the JB Lansings being the more expensive option. Those cabs were pretty cool. I've played through them before when I had the Orange head. I don't know what kind of speakers were in them, though, if it were the JB Lansings, or not.

There was the option for JBL, Altec Lansings, or Jensen. The Altec Lansings were the highest price of the three.

Out of all of those, Jensen is the only one still making speakers. JBL and Altec are still around, but they are just putting out audio and PA stuff these days, it seems. I couldn't find any thing to where it says they still manufacture and sell raw speakers for other uses.

I know it's kind of ridiculous, and probably far fetched, but I'm actually digging the idea of running two of those Kustom 3 x 15" cabs to have that 6 x 15" set up, with the Ampeg plugged into it. :P

There was also the Electro Voice SRO drivers that were pretty up there in price too. I'm not surprised Jensen is still in the market. A lot of amps were using them. When an amp had Jensens, and they needed replacing, most used Jensens as the replacement for the old Jensens.

The Kustom 6, 15's would be a killer.

The 1982 Fender Super Champ we have has an EV Force 10 PA speaker in it, which came stock with the amp as an upgrade that Fender offered at the time. It's 150 watts, so that's probably why that amp is so hard to over drive without blowing your head off in volume, at least in the small room it's been in. It's only an 18 watt tube amp, so there's very little chance of blowing that speaker. I don't even know what you could even replace it with, since they don't make them anymore. I'm not sure what EV still makes for raw speakers these days. They used to make this heavy duty 12" speaker that was 300 watt, but I don't know if they still do. I'd have to go check it out.

Jensen does seem to be a main stay for amps and things like that. I think it's also cool they make bass specific speakers now. I guess they said you could use the ones they had before hand, but they weren't as high rated for power, like maybe 100 or 150 watts, around there, for the most powerful ones they offered. Now they have those that can handle more.

Yeah, but they are pretty tall cabs, so you'd need the room to haul them. Still, that would flap some trousers, getting those moving some air. 8)

Electro Voice were surely up there. All those speakers seemed to have their niches they did well in. Go old driver Jensens.

I just looked at the EV site, and even though I couldn't find it on the site directly (unless I was looking in the wrong area,) I did find this when I tried over at AMS, and did a search online from that and found it back at the EV site: https://www.electrovoice.com/product.ph ... earch=EVM# https://www.americanmusical.com/Item--i ... CLSC8-LIST

They still make a 12" speaker that's 200 watts, and some Zack Wylde signature model that's 300 watts. I think they might be intended for guitar cabs, but it does look like they're strong enough for bass amps, with those ratings. I think Steve Harris, the bassist for Iron Maiden uses a 4 x 12" cab loaded with those EV's, from what I've read somewhere. I'm not sure if it's a Marshall, or Hiwatt cab, I forget. Although, I've heard he started using Orange amps, so who knows?
