And you know it's crazy, because the Vox Super Beatle peaked at 240 Watts. It was just too large of an open venue at Shea Stadium, like you said about the lack of PA support there. Plus again you're saying the screaming audience was another negative for them playing there.

Yeah, I think that was the main thing, they didn't have adequate PA at the time, probably because it didn't really exist yet, or they really didn't figure out how to compensate for that crowd, especially screaming like that. I'm sure those amps themselves would have been OK just for the stage volume, but not without the PA backing them up.

Right, Jim Marshall's PA systems were not really out on the market at that time.

Yeah, I think they were made because of that fact. I know the amp stacks were, thanks to The Who. It's funny, when The Who were starting out, as The Detours, they were all plugging into Vox AC15 combo amps, even sharing bass and vocals in one amp, before they got more gear. http://www.thewho.net/whotabs/gear/pa/pa6366.html

Can you imagine The Ox playing bass through a Vox AC15, with Roger singing through the same amp?

It's ironic how things went in the start up of some of the bands. At one time most started as garage bands. real early on any way.

That's true. I remember when I had a band in Florida with that friend that I mentioned in another post that I went with Fort Lauderdale with, we didn't have a PA, so he sang through a little Peavey Rage guitar amp I had, and we set it on top of a refrigerator that was in this little garage apartment that we practiced in, so we could hear his vocals.

As cheesy and ridiculous as that sounds, it worked, at least. It got the job done, and most clubs had some sort of PA to go through, anyway. We had decent bass and guitar rigs, at least. I had an Ampeg, and he had a Marshall rig. Although, he might have been running a Hughes and Kettner head back then, I don't remember, other than he had one after the other.

I actually used that little Peavey amp for everything. I used it to record 4-track demos with, since it had a line out that I could run to the recorder. I even used it for bass, since the speakers on those things were pretty strong. It wouldn't distort at a reasonable volume, at least. I never cranked it to find out, though. I didn't have the money to replace speakers with.

Been there with the early band stuff. Improvised like hell, but it worked.

Imagine what it was like in the early 60's, especially over in the UK, before they really had a lot of gear available, or just coming around. They'd plug into gramophone player amplifiers , like that Elpico that Paul McCartney had for his first amp. It had the 1/4" jack inputs, so why not? I've plugged my bass into my stereo before, just for the hell of it. I suppose that's the same thing, in a way, but not as portable.

There was a different amp line early on between England, and the US.

That's true. They also had some sort of embargo on US goods, so they couldn't even get Fender stuff in at the time. That's why Hofner became so prominent with guitars, and there was the Selmer, Watkins, and Vox stuff, to name a few.

I didn't think it was an embargo. It was high tariff taxes on MIA some electronics items. That drove the Fender Bassman's up even higher than they're regular high price. They all liked the Bassman amps. Especially Jim Marshall, who copied the basic design for the Marshalls.

I remember reading about that with the Marshalls, and Pete Townshend also mentioned that. He didn't wind up liking the Marshall amps, and just using the Fender Bassman and Pro heads with Marshall cabs, before he went over to the Hiwatt stuff. Paul McCartney also went over to a Bassman, too.

The Fender Bassman has always been a fine amp, just two damn expensive. Back then, and somewhat today as well. Hiwatts were similar to Sunns. One of the bigger amps you either liked, or didn't like. The Marshalls did have a blair all of their own. A signature sound if you like. They were intended for loud playing, by the Lord of Loud, Jim Marshall. Even today, for me, a stack of Marshalls says, I MEAN BUSINESS!!!
I guess it's because it's what I grew up to respect as the top amp to always look at in the local music stores that sold them. And later, I moved maybe too many of them.

That's true, they are the classic rock and roll amp, whatever that means. I guess the one thing about Marshalls is that they aren't known for a huge clean sound, like a Fender amp can do, which maybe is why Pete didn't like them as much. They are kind of a one trick pony, as far as guitar sounds go, albeit a good one.

The Marshall added a new sound that set the standard, still in use today. Some of the older players like Peter Frampton, still will use no other amps.
