It's kind of funny with the power thing, since I remember a time when 250 watts was a lot of power for an amp to even have, and now it's considered under powered, especially with these 1000 watt amps and all of that. Yeah, I should talk, since I had one. :P I think a lot of the problem with that is also speaker cabs not being sufficient enough, too. I'll bet if you hooked up your Hartke to an 8 x 10" cab, maybe like an Ampeg SVT or whatever, you could hang in a lot more situations than you think. Although, you might have to drive it pretty hard, too. It depends on what's going around around you.

That being said, I'm glad with what I do have because I'd still rather be safe than sorry, since I really don't know what sort of situations I'm going to be in where what type of amp I can get away with. The truth is I'll probably never need to have to run the full 800 watts out of my head, and as it is, it's going at 400 watts with the one cab, and I don't even know yet if I'll even have to drive it that hard with that, but I got a good deal on it, and it's there, so I don't have to worry about it.

400 Watts is nothing to sneeze at. That's some fine power there. If the quality of the cab is there, (drivers etc.), and the head's tone is true, You got it man. It would be interesting to see what my HA2500 wold be capable to do through a 4 watt, 8X10 cab.

That would be. You'd move some air, that's for sure. Have you ever played through an 8 x 10" cab?

I played through an Ampeg SVT / 8X10 1969-1970. A really nice powerful amp.

I think it was late 1969, at a friend's band practice. I did give one a try at Plantation Music, an Ampeg store / authorized dealer for Ampeg, in 1969. They were so new at that time. My God, they were impressive Monsters.

Wow, that's when they actually first came out, wasn't it? I think at the time, they recommended using two of those 8 x 10" cabs with the SVT, since I don't think the speakers were as heavy duty until later on. That certainly upped the bass amp game, though.

Ampeg did recommend the two cabs to accompany the SVT head at that time.

Yes, they had just been out a very short time in 1969, when Plantation Music became an authorized Ampeg dealer. Ron, Nick, and I, had just gone into the store to look around for about the 700 millionth time, when the owner approached us, and said like a little kid at Christmas, look what I'm a dealer for. Then he rolled out the newest Monster. It was the first Ampeg SVT, with the twin 8X10 cabs available on the East Coast of the U.S.A. He had just got it in at closing time the night before. He said we were the first to see it. It was pretty damn cool.

I just now sat here reflecting on that, after telling you about that morning. It was 50 years ago. Image

Yeah, that's quite a bit of history right there. 8) What was the most powerful amp around there before that one?

If I remember correctly, the Acoustic 360/361.

That's true, there was that amp. It was 200 watts, wasn't it?

I know they had those at Woodstock, and John Paul Jones used two of them.

The SVT Ampegs showed up at just the right time.

Yeah, things were starting to get bigger and a lot louder. That's the problem The Beatles had with playing live, the gear was so primitive, especially with the PA, they were drowned out by all of the screaming. Paul McCartney certainly could have used an SVT, that's for sure.
