I don't recall having a head / 12" cab sounded like I prefer it, as much as the Hartke combination. It's very well suited to the Alnico V pups as well.

No, I have the tone just a bit lower, or at 1/4 from the highest bass tone. Meaning the Treble is 3/4 down.

I've always just had the controls on the bass wide open, and adjust the amp accordingly. Although, when I was playing the Fender Precision Bass Lyte, I had to cut some of the treble on that, since it was active EQ, and I often just favored the Precision pickup on it, over the Jazz one.

How many rigs you've think you've had with that combination?

That's a good question. Come to think of it, one. This one! The rest of the head / 12" were 2X12 cabs, not head / 1x12 cab. Combos over the years, of course being a 1X12.

Hartke doesn't currently make a 2 x 12" cab, do they? I remember they did make an actual 2 x 12" combo amp many moons ago, but it didn't use any aluminum speakers, and it was 120 watts, with one of the speakers being down firing underneath the front one. Usually, you had Ampeg 2 x 12" cabs, didn't you?

The Mesa Powerhouse 212, Ampeg SVT-212AV, TCE K212, The mini stack; Markbass Mini CMD 121P / NY121. A few 1X12 Combos.

Oh yeah, I forgot about TC Electronics and Mesa Boogie making 2 x 12" cabs, as well. AMS used to carry a lot of that TC Electronics stuff, but I don't think they do anymore. I'm sure there are other cabs out there, as well. You know, stuff that we might not necessarily think about, because it's not something commonly seen on the usual music shop websites, like AMS, Guitar Center, etc.

I almost forgot myself, the TCE, and the Mesa. The Mesa was one hell of a cab.

I've heard they make some really good stuff, but I've never had any opportunity to play through any of it. I know Paul McCartney uses them for his bass rig, and occasionally Ashdown, as well. Come to think about it, I think Ashdown makes some 12" speaker cabs, or they did. That's another one.

Aguilar is up there with Mesa, price, and from what I've heard from others, quality to boot. I never played through an Aguilar. The price always scared me off from trying them. SA stocks them. I'm glad my local SA had two HA2500's in the box, and at least one 112b in the carton as well. The driver is breaking nice. That HyDrive 12 has a fine tone to it. I didn't realize I'd finish up with the Hartke, but I'm glad I have.

I got to play through that Aguilar DB 751 head and I think a 4 x 10" cab at this New York City rehearsal room, many moons ago. That thing was a beast, and yeah, I know what you mean by the price. Those things are almost $2400 new, so that's something that's way out of my price range. Jack Casady uses that amp when he does the electric Hot Tuna shows, but I'm pretty sure he can afford them, I would think. Great sounding gear, though.

I have to agree, the Hartke stuff does sound really great, especially those cabs. If I could get hold of one of those HyDrive cabs, or even the regular aluminum speaker cab ones, I certainly would. So, how do you like the 12" speaker in comparison to the 15" one that was in the combo?

The 12, & 15 in the HyDrive are pretty close in sound in my small area. But I guess I have to give the lower volume, and tone quality to the,................ 12. Dahhhh! Like you didn't know I'd say the 12 for overall likes here. Without having the JBL, Jensen, or, Electro Voice to compare to, the HyDrive is a fine driver. The aluminum / paper cone's tone cancels the need for tweeter, or HF Horn,........ at least I think so. The aluminum is kinda' one notch above the Eminence drivers. Here again,.......... my opinion, and growing biased opinion for the Hartke head, and cab.

I think the 12" speaker could also be the "Goldilocks" solution, especially for various room sizes. It's in between the 10" and 15" in size, so that might play it in favor for an all around solution. Speaking of 12"s, check out this cab: https://bergantino.com/product/hg412-loudspeaker/ It's 4 x 12" configuration, with one of the 12"s loaded in the rear of the cab for some sort of 3 dimensional sound field (according to them,) 1000 watts RMS at 4 ohms, and weighs 64 pounds. The kicker, it's expensive as hell, costing $1899! Pretty cool, though. That would be perfect for the Ampeg PF-800 head, but I'd have to win the lottery first. :P

I don't get that one, but ok. Hefty sticker price tag on it too!

Yeah, the rear mounted speaker is an odd concept to me, although there have been many designs with rear firing speakers, and that whole Isovent thing, or whatever is was called, with the two speakers facing each other, and angled, so maybe they're on to something. That price, though. Ouch! Still, a 1000 watt 4 x 12" cab that weighs 64 pounds, that part about it isn't too shabby.
