I could buy more than three Epi's for what the Hofner cost. The 500/1 anyway. The Epi's neck, and body are bigger than the Hofners. But it's very playable. And like I said before, the Epi uses standard size bass strings on the winding pegs. Image

Yeah, I imagine that makes putting on strings a lot easier. Although, that hollow body bridge was a pain in the arse to do that with, at least for me. I never dealt with that before, though.

Yep. That design is a bit of a challenge to string. Not that I would be using any other types of strings on the Epi, but it's nice to know my options of types of strings are far more better with the Epi. 8)

Yeah, not like there's a ton of options for short scale basses, but in that case, medium scale basses, because of the bridge. I suppose you do have a few companies making strings in that scale, though. I'm thinking about switching to Rotosound rounds on the Ibanez, but I'll still keep the flats on the violin bass. You know, to have a totally different sound for each bass, not that they sound alike in the first place. I'm not 100% certain, because the flats on there are playing really good on it, and that might be hard to make a switch. I suppose I could just hang onto them, and if I don't wind up liking the rounds on it, I can always switch back. Eventually, I would like to try some nylons on the violin bass, since I know they work well for it. I'm not looking forward to messing with that bridge again, though. :P

Restringing the Epi Viola is a two handed job, to say the least. Your Douglas must be about the same.

Yeah, especially since I'd never dealt with that sort of setup before. It just hooks under the tail piece somehow, and you tighten the string up with some determination, and luck. :P

I slip the ball under, and into the opening, and then rotate the ball sideways, so it pushes up into place in the slot, then I tighten the string. Once it's in place, and under tension, it's a good solid set.

As silly, or crazy as this must sound, of all the basses, except for the EKO, and the amps too, I really like the ones I have now, over any of the others in 50 years of playing. The Epiphone Viols case is good solid one.
The Markbass with the 12 performs great.

Oh, so that's how that actually works. I'm sure I did the same thing, but I wasn't exactly sure what the hell was going on, until it actually worked. :P Go to know for future reference.

That's good. 8) Sometimes, it can take a long time, with different experimentation with different things, to find an ideal sound, and sometimes even that can change. I've been thinking about that, as well. I kind have two different sounds I want to go with right now, but I can still use the same amp that I have to use them, at least.

Since now that I'm basically locked into using the Markbass, it's a good thing the Epi plays well with it, or I'd be in trouble for not being able to change out to a different amp. The one constant that I have is the Nylon strings. That sound is there, without any changes. I know what I get out of them for sounds.

That's good at least you have an amp and bass combination that works for you. The reason I've been thinking about rounds on the Ibanez, is that I've been wanting to go with more attack with those strings, maybe even more midrange. Something less warm sounding, I guess, but I'll still have that with the violin bass, either with the flats, or perhaps those nylons down the road. I've done a lot of recordings with rounds on them, and I do like the way the bass sits in the mix with them, so there's that, too. Especially, when I used the Squier Precision Bass on one track. It sounded so good to me, I kind of regretted selling that bass. You know, if I don't like the rounds, I could just change it back to flats. It wouldn't be a big deal. I'll just make sure I keep them around, since the flats I have on there now have a ton of life left on them.

It really is no problem changing out strings, as long as you're not stringing through the body. I don't think you have that option to deal with anyway, so you're fine moving strings around as you like. There isn't too much you can do about the Precision being out of there though. Try to emulate the sound of the Precision maybe from the Ibanez.

I suppose I could do that, since the Ibanez does have the same pickup configuration on it that the Squier did. But it's also a short scale, and the Squier wasn't. Maybe if I get rounds on it, I could still get the same sound I did with the Squier, at least to some degree. I could also do some more tweaking with the MXR Bass Preamp, with is what I did use for recording. Maybe change some settings with that thing, and see what happens.

Your preamp could be just what you may need to zero in on a particular sound, like a Precision. I forgot you used one.
