I'm checking out an Ampeg Portaflex 800. It has a headphone jack, can be played while not hooked up to a load, and has a single channel.

That's interesting. They have those discounted on AMS all of the time. That was another Ampeg option I had thought about, because of that, and the specs look pretty good for it, too. Plus, the videos sounded pretty good to me. It doesn't have any preamp tubes, though. It's totally solid state. I suppose that's something you'd have to worry about maintaining, at least. Although, they aren't as expensive as the main power ones are.

I went with a Portaflex 500. The specs between the 500, and 800, are very similar, and the PF-500 is $200. less in price. I took the one on the floor, until a new one gets into stock. It has a deep low, even with the Ric 4003.

That sounds good. 8) I'm very curious to see how this one pans out. If it's pretty decent, then the 800 one should be to, with an extra 300 watts. They also have one discounted at AMS, but of course, there's the damned struggle to sell the Orange to get one.

The Orange can be a problem, I guess.
500 watts is more than ample for me. I really didn't need 800. For that matter i can get by with less than 500. The SVT-410HLF is 4 ohms @ 500 watts.

Yeah, to be realistic, I can also get by with 500 watts, since that's not exactly a slouch with volume, especially with decent cabs, but since I already have a 1000 watts, I'd want to keep it close to that if I can. I guess I like the concept of it being there, even though I don't need it, at the moment. Like I've mentioned before, my only complaint is the lack of some EQ options, because of the violin bass, and I know the Ampeg does offer that. Plus, they sound pretty damned good, too. 8)

The PF-500 uses the same mosfet preamp as the Mesa does.
A pretty damn loud preamp with out tubes.

I don't know how you'd do with moving the Orange. Some people don't know what they are.

So you're not missing the preamp tubes, then?

Yeah, the Orange could be hit or miss, to get rid of, but they are popular as guitar amps. It's actually not a bad amp, even though I might want some other options. That's just me, not really any reflection on it's quality. Who knows, I'd might kick myself in the rear if I do sell it, because then I'd regret it down the road. That's also happened a few times, as well.

I don't miss the tubes at all. The Mesa Carbine M6 had the same style preamp as the Ampeg PF-500 does. The Mesa was one I should have hung on to. But now that I have this Ampeg setup, I'm doing fine. $400. for this head is pretty reasonable.

The Ampeg PF series are a pretty decent, underrated series. It seems like at one time or another, just about every SS class head has had an issue along the way. Yes Linnin even the Rumbles. Image

Yeah, things can go wrong with any piece of equipment, especially when it's brand new, and there are bugs to be ironed out, or an issue with quality control. As long as they can be corrected, then that's what matters. That can happen with anything, even besides amps.
