I have to say, it is a hell of a piece of gear, Bass amps have certainly come a long way from back then, in a lot of ways. It seemed for a long time they were sort of an afterthought compared to a lot of guitar amps, or they weren't as developed for a long time, in comparison. Although, you could still get some killer sounds with the older stuff, too. I guess it's all in what you're looking for.

Yeah, the old stuff can, and does sound good, but God help you if something catastrophic goes wrong with it.

That's true, but at least you can say it's also because it has wear and tear from being used for so many years, if something happened to it now. You can't really say that if something brand new craps out, which can and does often happen. Look at the amps you've had to deal with which that happened.

True, but I guess I'm to the point, I don't want to have to mess with the older design repairs I was able to fix at one time.

You did a lot of repairs yourself?

I did some. Transformers, tubes, speakers, etc. I was pretty damn good with a soldering iron. I didn't need reading glasses back then to see the parts in the amp heads.

Unfortunately, a soldering iron isn't something that I ever really learned how to use. I suppose it's never too late to learn, but I don't even have one to begin with. It's a good idea to know how to fix certain things, I think. It can save you a lot of money if you can, sometimes.

The main thin is to clean the contacts before solider is applied. Don't overdue the solider to the contacts, but make sure everything is covered. If you need to, you can always reheat the connections and do it again, if it wasn't a good contact. It's not hard, just a bit of practice, and just do it.

Yeah, I suppose it is pretty simple, as long as you do the right steps. I guess like anything else you do with practice.

That really is about it Paul. Some of the older irons got a bit to hot, so you had to back it off a bit so you didn't burn contacts.

As much as I like some of the higher powered Combos, the Bassman setup has me set. I needed to move it the other day, and it was very friendly to move around. I'm sold on the the two channel setup on the 800 head too. It's cool to 500 watts to use, and still have 300 more sitting around.

I have to say, it does sound like an ideal rig, especially with the available power and the weight doesn't seem to be too bad, either. Especially, when you have things like old Peavey combos that weigh a ton, but are only 150 watts, give or take. Sure, they're built like tanks, but when you're gigging that can be a drag.

I talked an old friend to truck his Bassman 410 Neo over here, while on his way home from gig. I tried both of my basses with my 800, in the room I play in. Comparing the 115 to the 410, I liked the 410 like crazy. So, in about two, to three weeks, I'm changing out the 115 for a 410. I know I'm crazy, but both basses sound great through the 800 / 410.

Well, that just answered my question on your other thread related to this. I should really read all of the threads before I make inquiries. :P I thought you might have gone into the Sam Ash and got some GAS, or something. I have to admit, the 4 x 10" configuration really does work for a bass rig. As much as I wanted the 18" cab to work because of the association with the 60's British Invasion music, and related gear used for it, like the Vox Foundation, it wasn't, and it didn't work in a modern situation. Or maybe, it is just using a speaker that was meant for just sub woofer use, and not any instruments. That, and I'm not on some giant stage like you'd have back in the day with the Acoustic 360/361 rigs with the 18" cabs, which were also a different type of speaker application.

A slight change possibly on the horizon as to a 410 cab. I'm in all probability going to go with the Ampeg SVT-410HLF. It costs the same as the 410 Neo, and it's a 4 ohm cab. It's a 500 watts rms, and peaks at 1,000 watts. With the Bassman 800 @ 4 ohms, I can get the full 800 watts, and be 200 watts below the cab's 1,000 peak. Once I would get it home it wouldn't be moved around. I did try my 4003 through one, and it sounded good. I know if the Ric did ok through the SVT-410, the GL will will crush the walls here @ 800 watts pushing the air.
