I've decided to get a fender rumble 2x10, but I'm not sure what wattage i should get. I need it to be quiet enough to not bother my neighbors, but loud enough to compete with a heavy handed drummer and a mustang V through a 4x12. Also, any suggestions for tuner, chorus, compression, reverb, and overdrive pedals? I have an ibanez sr500, and play mostly rock/heavy music.

Sorry, you can't have both, neighbors will hear your bass also with "low "power Rumble amp.

If you are talking about getting a Rumble 210 cabinet, you can get either a Rumble 200 or Rumble 500 head. For loud band work, the 500 will never disappoint, and you would be just as well off getting the Rumble 500 2x10 combo. For low volume personal practice, the Rumble 40 is unbeatable.

I'd go with the 500 (head or combo,) that way you don't have to worry about drummers or guitarists. Plus, there is a volume knob and headphone jack, which would take care or any neighbor issues. You can always turn it down when not playing with a loud band, or use headphones.

Well, pedals can be a matter of personal taste, but I've found out that you can't usually go wrong with a Boss or MXR pedal. That's from my personal experience, though. You may not like the sound of them, even though I do. They are built pretty tough, though.

I agree with Paul on the 500, for either the head, or combo. I'm a bit in favor of the 500 head, it's a bit more versatile with cabs. Ya never know what changes can come down the road with head/cabs. Also if you have a problem with the head part in a combo, your entire amp is down. The head is at least replaceable, not having the extra expense of the speaker part of the combo also.

I wonder if the amp section comes out of the Rumble 500? Sometimes, combo amps have that feature.

Some do. TC Electronic has the RS series I believe is, that is made to slide the head out, and can be used in a different cab. MarkBass on some, but they really aren't suppose to be removed unless in a tech shop.

No it doesn't. Head and cabs are always more expensive than a combo, but are far more versatile.

Most amp manufacturers don't want non tech people poking around inside the power section of a combo, or inside a head.

I'd go with 500W and a separate cab if possible. I used a Bassman 250/210 for a long time and in a small room, not playing rock, it was okay. But it really couldn't keep up when I used it with say a drummer, amplified keyboards and a modestly loud guitarist. Around that time, I was also rehearsing with a songwriter and we were using a GC rehearsal room that came with a Line6 bass amp. The 450W should have been enough but the one 12" speaker just wasn't cutting it. That was drummer right next to me, loud keyboards and metal guitarist.

On the other hand, this past weekend the group I hear had 2 acoustic-electric players and a drummer. Bassist was using a Markbass 500W 2 X 10 and she was clear and clean all the way through. So the value of the 2nd cab -- I think she'd have gotten lost with just a 2 X 10 if they'd been all electric and at double the volume. You might want to consider a 4 X 10 in a situation like that.

What I have right now is a 500W 2 X 12 (GK) for Jazz, folk, folk-rock, etc. It's an all in one but with Neo speakers, not that hard to carry around. The big rig on the other hand is a Hartke HA5000 and I can use either a 4 X 10, a 1 X 15" with horn or both. Both = Drummer and Guitarist can't find their volume control.

And my last point is consider used: I got the GK during a GC used gear sale and I knew I was getting a decent price. The Hartke head and 1 X 15 were new but the 4 X 10 was used - a vintage Guild/Hartke cab the original owner had not been able to sell. His sister got tired of looking at it in the garage and I got a killer deal.

I've played through two of those Guild/Hartke cabs with a Gallien Krueger 800RB at a gig in NYC 11 years ago (it was their house rig and I didn't have an amp at the time.) That was a nice set up and those were nice cabs. Really punchy.

I love the one I have and interestingly, the seller was from the east coast. He brought them west with him but then ended up leaving them behind when he decided to go back east. I bought mine 3 years ago, and he said they'd been out here for about 2 before that. I bought the cab his sister wanted out of the garage "pronto" but he had another cab I could have bought too. I have to wonder if they could have been the ones you used, given that the guy was a sometime agent, sometime musician, sometime club staff, etc, based on what he told me.

You know, it could have been one of the cabs they had at that club. Actually, I might have even played there in 2003 or 2004, not 2005 like I originally thought. Still, a lot longer than when you said they were out there. If he worked in NYC, that's a strong possibility. I wonder how many of those Guild/Hartke cabs were made and still around?

The one I got was the first I saw in roughly a year of looking on several well known sites where you can buy musical gear. As mentioned, he had two cabs - the one I got but there was a second one out here I could have "if I wanted it." He said it was identical, same vintage but I'd have to drive up to Sacramento (6 hour drive) to get it. I passed.

The one I have is built like a tank and you almost need a crane to lift it, so I'd think some are still out there.

I got the Rumble 200, kept it for 4 days, then returned it to get theRumble 500 v3 Combo and 115 cabinet. Best of both worlds. A 2x10 combo plus a 15 to add a little more to the bottom end and extra wattge (350w/8hm to 500 w/4 ohms) with cab attached.
